Heavy Journey but Traveling Light

Trusting God’s Provision and Following Jesus

Following Jesus often involves stepping into situations where we do not have all the answers, all the resources, or all the details. We prefer certainty. We like to be prepared. We like to know what is coming next.

Yet in Matthew 10, Jesus sent His disciples into ministry with surprisingly few possessions. They were not sent with extra money, extra supplies, or backup plans. Instead, they were sent with God’s authority, God’s presence, and God’s provision.

This lesson explores what it means to trust God, travel lightly, and follow Jesus with faith.

What we need most for God’s work won’t fit in a suitcase. We need the love of Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Scripture

Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19

Matthew 9:35–10:23

Jesus Saw the Need

Before Jesus sent His disciples, He saw the crowds.

“They were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36)

Jesus saw people who were weary, burdened, and searching for hope. The crowds were struggling physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially.

Jesus was moved by compassion.

Christian service begins with seeing people the way Jesus sees them.

Disciples are not called merely to complete tasks. They are called to care about people.

The Harvest Is Plentiful

Jesus told His disciples:

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” (Matthew 9:37)

There were many people who needed hope, healing, guidance, and the good news of God’s kingdom.

The challenge was not the size of the harvest.

The challenge was finding workers willing to go.

God still calls believers today to be workers in His harvest field.

Jesus Sends Ordinary People

The disciples were not famous leaders.

They included fishermen, a tax collector, and ordinary working people.

Yet Jesus entrusted them with His mission.

This reminds us that God often uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.

God is not looking for perfect people.

God is looking for willing people.

Traveling Light

Jesus instructed His disciples not to carry extra money or extra supplies.

This was not because those things were evil.

It was because Jesus wanted His followers to learn dependence.

The disciples would discover that God could provide through unexpected people and unexpected circumstances.

Many of us carry baggage that weighs us down.

Worry

Fear

Anxiety

Control

Pride

Self-reliance

Past hurts

The need to have everything figured out

Sometimes the heaviest baggage is not physical.

It is spiritual.

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide

Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as Provider.

The disciples would learn that God would supply what they needed as they carried out His mission.

This does not mean life would be easy.

It means they would never be abandoned.

God’s provision may come through circumstances.

God’s provision may come through people.

God’s provision may come through opportunities.

God’s provision may come through the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

The same remains true today.

Depending on the Holy Spirit

Jesus knew His disciples would face challenges.

They would encounter rejection.

They would face opposition.

They would sometimes feel inadequate.

Yet Jesus promised that God would be with them.

The Holy Spirit would guide, strengthen, and equip them.

Followers of Christ today are not expected to serve God in their own strength.

We are called to rely on the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit gives wisdom.

The Spirit provides courage.

The Spirit helps us know what to say and what to do.

What Are You Carrying?

One of the central questions from this message is simple:

What are you carrying?

What burdens are weighing you down?

What fears keep you from trusting God?

What worries prevent you from moving forward in faith?

Jesus invites us to place those burdens in His hands.

The more tightly we hold onto our baggage, the harder it becomes to follow Him.

What We Need Most

At the end of the message came a powerful reminder:

What we need most for God’s work will never fit in a suitcase.

We need the love of Christ.

We need the presence of God.

We need the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

We need faith to trust wherever Jesus leads.

Reflection Questions

What baggage am I carrying that God wants me to surrender?

Where is God asking me to trust Him more deeply?

How have I seen God provide for me in the past?

Who might God be sending me to serve this week?

What does it mean for me to travel lightly and follow Jesus faithfully?

Living the Message

Spend time each day this week asking God to reveal any burdens, fears, or worries that are keeping you from fully trusting Him.

Pray for the courage to surrender those things to Christ.

Look for opportunities to serve others and trust God to provide what you need as you follow His leading.

Remember:

Travel light.

Trust deeply.

Follow faithfully.
