Volunteer Opportunities

Serving Together, Changing Lives

Volunteers work side by side transforming recycled plastic bags into sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness. Through service, fellowship, and compassion, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church seeks to share Christ’s love with neighbors in need.

Serving God by Serving Our Neighbors

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe faith grows as we worship, learn, pray, and serve.

Volunteering is one way we live out our faith in everyday life. Through acts of service, hospitality, care, encouragement, and outreach, we seek to love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously.

You do not have to know everything, have special training, or be available every week to serve. There is a place for every person to help.

Why We Serve

Jesus calls His followers to love God and love our neighbors.

When we serve, we become part of God’s work in the church, in Pleasant Grove, and throughout western Birmingham. Some acts of service are very visible. Others happen quietly in the background. All of them matter.

Volunteering helps us grow in faith, build relationships, encourage others, and become a beacon of Christ’s light in our community.

Ways to Volunteer

There are many ways to serve at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

You may help welcome people on Sunday mornings, assist with special events, support outreach ministries, help with children or youth, serve through music and worship, prepare food, visit or encourage others, help with seasonal projects, support communication and technology, or take part in hands-on mission work.

Some opportunities happen weekly. Some happen monthly. Others happen only during special events or seasons of the year.

Current Areas of Service

Volunteers help make church life and outreach possible through ministries such as Making Mats for the Homeless, the Blessing Box, the Little Library, Harvest Festival, Prayer Shawl Ministry, Elderblest, Chair Yoga, Lunch and Learn, health fairs, worship support, hospitality, care for homebound members, community events, and mission collections.

Each ministry offers a different way to serve, and each one helps us care for people with the love of Christ.

Serving in Worship

Sunday worship includes many opportunities for service.

People may serve as greeters, ushers, liturgists, acolytes, choir members, musicians, media helpers, communion assistants, altar and worship table helpers, or behind-the-scenes volunteers.

These acts of service help create a welcoming place where people can worship, pray, hear Scripture, and experience the presence of God.

Serving Through Care and Encouragement

Some volunteers serve by offering care, prayer, encouragement, and support.

This may include making prayer shawls, writing cards, checking on homebound members, helping with meals, supporting families in hard seasons, encouraging caregivers, or helping connect people with ministries of care.

These quiet acts of love remind people that they are not forgotten.

Serving Through Outreach

Pleasant Grove UMC seeks to be a beacon of light in Pleasant Grove, western Birmingham, and beyond.

Volunteers help with local outreach, mission collections, food and community support ministries, mats for the homeless, seasonal giving opportunities, service projects, and partnerships that bless our neighbors.

Through outreach, neighbors become family.

Serving Through Fellowship and Events

Church life includes many gatherings where volunteers make a difference.

You may help set up tables, decorate, prepare food, welcome guests, clean up after events, take pictures, organize supplies, or help create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Every act of hospitality helps someone feel welcome.

Not Sure Where to Start?

That is okay.

A good first step is to choose one ministry that interests you, attend a gathering, ask a question, or offer to help with one small task.

Serving does not have to begin with a big commitment. Sometimes it begins with simply saying, “I can help.”
