The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit descended on Pentecost as flaming tongues of fire
God’s Presence, Power, and Guidance With Us
The Holy Spirit is God’s presence with us.
Jesus promised that His followers would not be left alone. God sends the Holy Spirit to comfort, guide, teach, strengthen, convict, and empower believers to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit is not simply a feeling or symbol. The Holy Spirit is God at work in us and among us.
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe the Holy Spirit helps us grow in faith, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously as followers of Christ.
Who Is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God.
The Bible teaches that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Christians call this the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is fully God and works in the lives of believers and the church.
The Holy Spirit was present in creation, active through the prophets, present in the life and ministry of Jesus, and poured out on the church at Pentecost.
What Does the Holy Spirit Do?
The Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s truth.
The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and draws us toward repentance, forgiveness, and new life in Christ.
The Holy Spirit comforts us in hard seasons, gives us courage when we are afraid, and reminds us that we belong to God.
The Holy Spirit also gives gifts to believers so the church can serve, teach, encourage, lead, pray, give, show mercy, and build up the body of Christ.
The Holy Spirit and Jesus
Jesus promised His disciples that the Holy Spirit would come after His ascension.
The Holy Spirit would help them remember Jesus’ teaching, guide them into truth, and give them power to witness.
The same Spirit who strengthened the first followers of Jesus continues to strengthen the church today.
The Holy Spirit and Pentecost
Pentecost is the day we remember the Holy Spirit being poured out on the followers of Jesus.
In Acts 2, the disciples were gathered together when the Holy Spirit came upon them. They were empowered to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.
Pentecost reminds us that the church is not built by human strength alone. The church lives by the power of God.
The Holy Spirit and Daily Faith
The Holy Spirit helps faith move from Sunday worship into everyday life.
When we pray, study Scripture, serve others, forgive, show compassion, speak truth, or take a step of obedience, the Holy Spirit is at work shaping us more like Christ.
The Spirit helps us grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The Holy Spirit is not only something we learn about.
The Holy Spirit is God’s presence with us today.
The Holy Spirit Produces Spiritual Fruit
One of the clearest signs of the Holy Spirit’s work in a believer’s life is the growth of spiritual fruit. As we follow Christ, the Spirit develops love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control within us. Learn more on the Fruit of the Holy Spirit page.
