Fruit of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit shapes believers to reflect the character of Christ through love, joy, peace, and other spiritual fruit.
The fruit of the Holy Spirit describes the kind of life God grows in us as we follow Jesus. Spiritual fruit is not something we produce by trying harder on our own. It is the result of the Holy Spirit working within us, shaping our hearts, attitudes, words, choices, and relationships.
The Apostle Paul writes in Galatians 5:22–23 that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” These qualities show what Christlike character looks like in everyday life.
The fruit of the Spirit is different from spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are ways God equips believers to serve. The fruit of the Spirit is the character God grows in every believer. Not everyone has the same gifts, but every follower of Jesus is called to grow in the fruit of the Spirit.
Love is seen when we seek the good of others. Joy is a deep gladness rooted in God, even when life is difficult. Peace is confidence in God’s presence and care. Patience helps us endure with grace. Kindness shows compassion in action. Goodness reflects God’s righteousness and mercy. Faithfulness means being dependable and loyal to God. Gentleness shows strength under control. Self-control helps us live wisely and resist what pulls us away from God.
The fruit of the Spirit grows as we stay connected to Christ through worship, prayer, Scripture, service, Christian community, and the means of grace. Just as fruit grows slowly on a healthy tree, spiritual fruit develops over time as we abide in Jesus.
This does not mean Christians become perfect overnight. Growth is often gradual. The Holy Spirit continues working in us through seasons of joy, struggle, correction, forgiveness, and renewal.
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe the Christian life is not only about knowing what we believe. It is also about becoming more like Jesus in the way we love God, love others, and live each day.
When the fruit of the Spirit is growing in us, people begin to see the character of Christ through our words, actions, attitudes, and relationships.
