HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE
Learning to Understand and Apply God’s Word
The Bible is one of God’s greatest gifts to His people. Through Scripture, we learn who God is, understand His plan of salvation, discover how to follow Jesus, and find guidance for daily living.
Many people begin by reading the Bible, but over time they also want to learn how to study it more deeply. Bible study helps us move beyond simply reading words on a page and into understanding their meaning, context, and application.

WHAT IS BIBLE STUDY?
Bible study is the process of carefully reading Scripture to understand what God is saying through His Word.
Bible study involves observation, understanding, reflection, prayer, and application. It helps us discover the original meaning of a passage and consider how God’s truth applies to our lives today.
The goal is not simply to gain knowledge. The goal is to know God more deeply and become more faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
BEGIN WITH PRAYER
Before opening the Bible, ask God to guide your study.
Prayer reminds us that understanding Scripture is not only an intellectual exercise. The Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s truth and apply it to our lives.
A simple prayer might be:
“Lord, open my heart and mind to Your Word. Teach me what You want me to learn and help me live according to Your truth. Amen.”
STEP 1: READ THE PASSAGE CAREFULLY
Read the passage slowly and thoughtfully.
Read it more than once.
Notice names, places, repeated words, commands, promises, questions, and key events.
Pay attention to details that might otherwise be overlooked.
Sometimes reading aloud can help you notice things you missed before.
STEP 2: OBSERVE WHAT THE PASSAGE SAYS
Ask questions about the text itself.
Who is speaking?
Who is listening?
What is happening?
When and where does this take place?
What words or ideas are repeated?
What stands out?
Observation helps us understand what the passage actually says before we decide what it means.
STEP 3: UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT
Context is one of the most important tools in Bible study.
Consider what comes before and after the passage.
Ask where the passage fits within the larger book.
Think about the historical setting, audience, and purpose of the writing.
Understanding context helps prevent misunderstandings and allows Scripture to speak for itself.
STEP 4: IDENTIFY THE MAIN MESSAGE
Every passage has a central message.
Ask yourself:
What is the primary truth being taught?
What is God revealing about Himself?
What does this passage teach about faith, obedience, grace, salvation, worship, or discipleship?
Try summarizing the passage in one or two sentences.
STEP 5: LOOK FOR CONNECTIONS TO JESUS
The entire Bible points toward God’s plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.
As you study, ask:
How does this passage point to Jesus?
Does it reveal God’s character?
Does it show humanity’s need for salvation?
Does it connect to the gospel message?
Looking for these connections helps us see the unity of Scripture.
STEP 6: APPLY THE PASSAGE
Bible study is meant to change lives.
Ask:
What should I believe because of this passage?
Is there a command to obey?
Is there a promise to trust?
Is there a warning to heed?
Is there an example to follow?
How should my attitudes, actions, or priorities change?
Application is where Bible study becomes personal.
HELPFUL BIBLE STUDY TOOLS
Many resources can help deepen your understanding of Scripture.
Study Bibles provide notes and background information.
Bible dictionaries explain people, places, and important terms.
Bible maps help visualize locations and journeys.
Concordances help locate words and themes throughout Scripture.
Commentaries offer insights from Bible scholars and teachers.
These tools are helpful, but Scripture itself should remain the primary focus.
A SIMPLE BIBLE STUDY METHOD
Many people use the following simple approach:
Read the passage.
Observe what it says.
Interpret what it means.
Apply what you learn.
Pray about your response.
This simple method can be used with almost any passage of Scripture.
GROWING AS A STUDENT OF GOD’S WORD
Bible study is a lifelong journey.
You do not need to understand everything immediately. Some passages are simple and encouraging. Others require patience and deeper study.
As you continue reading and studying, your understanding grows over time. God uses His Word to shape our hearts, strengthen our faith, and guide our lives.
