Believers gathered for worship around God's Word, representing the continuing story of the Church from Pentecost through the spread of the gospel and into the present day. The image symbolizes faith, discipleship, community, and the work of the Holy Spirit among God's people. For PGUM.org, a photo from your own congregation worshiping, singing, praying, serving, or gathered around the communion table would be even stronger if you have one available. It visually communicates your theme: "We are part of the same story."

From Pentecost to Today
The story of the Church is the story of God’s work through ordinary people empowered by the Holy Spirit to share the hope of Jesus Christ with the world.

Learn the Story of the Church

From Resurrection to the World

The story of the Church is the story of what God did after the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Through ordinary people empowered by the Holy Spirit, the good news spread from Jerusalem to the nations.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe learning this story helps us understand our faith, our mission, and our place in God’s continuing work today.

Where the Story Begins

The Church began after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus.

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus told His followers to wait for the promised Holy Spirit and to be His witnesses.

That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost.

The Birth of the Church

Pentecost – Acts 2

The Holy Spirit came with power, boldness, and new life.

People heard the gospel, believed, and thousands were added to the Church.

This was the beginning of a living movement that continues today.

The Early Church

The first believers devoted themselves to:

  • Teaching
  • Fellowship
  • Prayer
  • Worship
  • Generosity
  • Caring for one another
  • Sharing the gospel

They were not perfect people—but they were transformed people.

When Faith Was Tested

The early Church also faced:

  • Persecution
  • Opposition
  • Questions
  • Cultural change
  • Internal challenges

Yet God continued to guide and grow His people.

The Gospel Goes Out

Peter, Philip, Barnabas, Paul, and Others

The message of Jesus spread beyond Jerusalem into Samaria, Antioch, Asia Minor, Greece, Rome, and beyond.

Mission became central to church life.

Paul’s Journeys

Paul the Apostle traveled widely planting churches, teaching believers, and writing letters that now form much of the New Testament.

His story reminds us that God can transform lives and use anyone for His purpose.

Living the Faith

The letters of the New Testament taught believers how to live with:

  • Love
  • Unity
  • Holiness
  • Courage
  • Hope
  • Perseverance

The Church was called not only to believe—but to live differently.

Why This Story Matters Today

We are part of the same story.

The Church today is still called to:

  • Worship Christ
  • Share hope
  • Serve others
  • Grow in truth
  • Love neighbors
  • Live by the Spirit
