The Apostles’ Creed connects believers across generations through a shared confession of faith, hope, and trust in God.
The Apostles’ Creed
Words of Faith We Say Together
The Apostles’ Creed is one of the oldest and most widely used statements of Christian faith.
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we often say the Apostles’ Creed together in worship. These words help us remember what Christians have believed across generations: who God is, what Jesus has done, and how the Holy Spirit forms the Church.
The creed is not a replacement for Scripture. It is a summary of the faith we confess because of Scripture.
Why We Say the Apostles’ Creed in Worship
When we say the creed, we are not just reading words on a screen or page.
We are joining our voices with Christians across time and around the world.
The Apostles’ Creed helps us:
Remember the heart of Christian belief
Confess our faith together
Teach the faith to new generations
Stand on truth when life feels uncertain
Worship God with both heart and mind
What the Creed Teaches
The Apostles’ Creed is organized around the three persons of the Trinity.
I Believe in God the Father
We confess that God is our Creator, the maker of heaven and earth.
This reminds us that life is not accidental. We belong to God, and all creation is held in His care.
I Believe in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, Our Lord
The creed tells the story of Jesus:
His birth
His suffering
His death
His burial
His resurrection
His ascension
His promised return
This is the heart of our hope. Jesus entered our world, gave Himself for us, rose from the dead, and reigns as Lord.
I Believe in the Holy Spirit
The creed also teaches that God is still at work through the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit forms the Church, brings forgiveness, strengthens believers, and points us toward resurrection life.
Why It Matters
The Apostles’ Creed gives us words when faith feels simple and when faith feels difficult.
It reminds us:
God created us
Jesus saves us
The Holy Spirit sustains us
The Church is bigger than one congregation
Forgiveness is real
Resurrection is our hope
These are not just ideas to memorize. They are truths to live by.
How We Respond
When we say, “I believe,” we are making a personal confession within a gathered community.
We are saying:
This is the truth I stand on.
This is the hope I trust.
This is the faith I want to live.
The Apostles’ Creed invites us to worship with confidence, learn with humility, and walk faithfully with Christ.
A Simple Prayer
God our Father,
Thank You for the faith handed down through generations.
Help us believe with our hearts, confess with our voices, and live with our lives.
Strengthen us through Jesus Christ, guide us by the Holy Spirit, and make us faithful witnesses of Your grace.
Amen.
