Symbols That Point Us to Christ
Worship Symbols
Understanding the Meaning Behind What We See in Worship
When we enter a worship space, we notice more than words and music.
We see candles, a cross, colors, a Bible, a communion table, and other signs that help point our hearts toward God.
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, worship symbols help us remember who God is, what Christ has done, and how the Holy Spirit continues to work among us.
These symbols are not objects we worship.
They are reminders that help us worship God with our heart, mind, and actions.
Why Worship Symbols Matter
Symbols help us see and remember spiritual truth.
They teach without many words.
They connect us to Scripture.
They remind us that Christian worship is bigger than one person, one church, or one generation.
When we understand the symbols around us, worship becomes richer and more meaningful.
Common Symbols in Worship
The Cross
The cross is the central symbol of the Christian faith.
It reminds us of Jesus Christ—His love, His sacrifice, His death, and His resurrection.
The cross tells us that sin and death do not have the final word.
In Christ, we have forgiveness, hope, and new life.
Candles
Candles remind us that Jesus is the Light of the world.
When candles are lit in worship, they help us remember that God’s light shines in darkness and that Christ is present with His people.
They also remind us that we are called to carry the light of Christ into the world.
The Bible
The Bible reminds us that worship is grounded in God’s Word.
When Scripture is read, we listen for truth, wisdom, correction, encouragement, and hope.
God’s Word shapes what we believe and how we live.
The Communion Table
The communion table reminds us of Christ’s invitation, grace, sacrifice, and presence.
At the table, we remember Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples and His gift of Himself for the life of the world.
Communion reminds us that we receive grace—and are sent out to live as people of grace.
Water
Water is often connected with baptism.
It reminds us of cleansing, new life, belonging, and God’s grace.
In baptism, we remember that God claims us, welcomes us, and calls us to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.
Colors of the Church Year
The colors used in worship help mark the seasons of the Christian year.
Purple, white, red, green, and other colors help us move through seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost.
These colors help tell the story of Jesus throughout the year.
Standing, Sitting, and Movement
Even our posture can have meaning in worship.
We may stand to sing, sit to listen, kneel or bow in prayer, or come forward to receive communion.
These actions help us worship not only with our words, but with our whole selves.
Passing the Peace
When we pass the peace, we are reminded that Christ brings reconciliation.
We greet one another not simply as friends, but as brothers and sisters in Christ.
It is a sign of welcome, forgiveness, unity, and Christian community.
What This Teaches Us
Truth: Worship symbols point us to God’s story of creation, grace, salvation, and new life in Jesus Christ.
Reason: Symbols help us remember and understand what we believe.
Change: When we understand worship more deeply, we are better prepared to live faithfully beyond the worship service.
Worship Shapes Our Lives
Worship symbols are not only for Sunday morning.
The cross reminds us to live with sacrificial love.
The candles remind us to shine Christ’s light.
The Bible reminds us to listen for God’s truth.
The table reminds us to receive grace and share grace.
Water reminds us that we belong to God.
It becomes part of how we live.
