Prayer and Worship Preparation

Preparing Our Hearts for Worship
Prayer helps us slow down, listen for God’s voice, and enter worship with hearts ready to receive His grace, truth, and guidance.
Preparing Our Hearts to Meet God
Worship begins before the first hymn is sung, before the first prayer is spoken, and before the sermon is preached.
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe prayer helps prepare our hearts, minds, and lives to worship God with attention, humility, gratitude, and faith.
Prayer and worship preparation remind us that worship is not simply an event we attend. Worship is a holy time when God’s people gather to remember who God is, receive His grace, respond to His Word, and be shaped for faithful living.
Why Preparation Matters
Life can be busy, noisy, and full of distractions. We may come to worship carrying joy, grief, worry, questions, weariness, gratitude, or hope.
Prayer gives us space to bring all of that before God.
Before worship, prayer helps us slow down and remember that we are entering sacred time with God and with one another.
We do not have to come perfectly prepared. We simply come honestly, trusting that God meets us with grace.
Preparing the Heart
Prayer prepares the heart by helping us turn our attention toward God.
We may pray quietly before worship begins. We may pray as we enter the sanctuary. We may pray while listening to the music, looking at the cross, or sitting in silence.
These quiet moments help us say, “Lord, I am here. Speak to me. Shape me. Help me worship You.”
Preparing the Mind
Worship also involves the mind.
As we prepare for worship, we ask God to help us listen carefully to Scripture, understand the message, and recognize how His truth speaks into everyday life.
We come ready to learn, grow, and be changed.
At Pleasant Grove UMC, we believe Christian discipleship includes worship, study, prayer, service, and daily faith.
Preparing for Prayer Together
During worship, we pray as one body.
We pray for the church, our neighbors, our community, those who are sick, those who are grieving, those who are serving, and those who need hope.
When we prepare for worship, we remember that we are not worshiping alone. We gather as the family of God.
As neighbors become family, prayer helps us carry one another before the Lord.
Preparing to Hear God’s Word
Prayer helps us receive Scripture with open hearts.
Before the sermon, we can ask God to help us hear what He wants to teach us.
We may pray:
Lord, open my heart to Your Word.
Help me understand Your truth.
Show me how to live it this week.
Give me courage to respond with faith.
Preparing to Respond
Worship is not only about hearing. It is also about responding.
Through prayer, singing, giving, Communion, Scripture, and service, we respond to God’s grace.
Preparation helps us ask:
What is God teaching me?
Where do I need to trust Him?
Who is God calling me to love, forgive, encourage, or serve?
How can I carry worship into the week ahead?
A Simple Prayer Before Worship
Lord God,
quiet my heart and focus my mind.
Help me worship You with honesty, humility, and joy.
Open my ears to Your Word.
Open my eyes to Your presence.
Open my hands for service.
Open my life to Your will.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
