Worship Practices

Understanding the Sacred Actions of Worship

Worship is more than words we say on Sunday morning. It is something we do together.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, our worship practices help us remember who God is, receive His grace, respond with faith, and grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Some practices may feel familiar. Others may be new. Each one has meaning.

This page is part of Understanding Our Worship, a place to learn why we do what we do when we gather before God.

Why Worship Practices Matter

Worship practices help us:

  • Remember God’s truth
  • Receive God’s grace
  • Respond with prayer and praise
  • Grow together as the body of Christ
  • Carry our faith into daily life

They are not empty habits. They are ways we participate in God’s story.

Holy Communion

Communion is a sacred meal of remembrance, grace, and hope.

At the Lord’s Table, we remember Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection. We receive the gift of God’s grace and are reminded that we belong to Christ and to one another.

In the United Methodist Church, the Communion table is open to all who seek to respond to Christ’s love.

Baptism

Baptism is a sign of God’s grace and our belonging in the family of faith.

Through water and the work of the Holy Spirit, baptism reminds us that God claims us, cleanses us, and calls us to new life in Christ.

In the United Methodist Church, baptism may be offered for infants, children, youth, or adults.

Prayer

Prayer is one of the central practices of worship.

Together we praise God, confess our need, give thanks, pray for others, and seek God’s guidance. Prayer teaches us to trust God with our whole lives.

Sometimes we pray silently. Sometimes we pray together. Sometimes we pray words passed down through the church, such as the Lord’s Prayer.

Scripture Reading

When Scripture is read in worship, we listen for the Word of God.

The Bible teaches, corrects, encourages, comforts, and calls us to faithful living. Scripture grounds our worship in truth and helps us understand who God is and how we are called to live.

Giving

Giving is an act of worship.

When we give, we acknowledge that everything we have belongs to God. Our gifts support the ministry of the church, care for our neighbors, and help share the hope of Christ in Pleasant Grove, western Birmingham, and beyond.

Giving is not only about money. It is also about offering our time, gifts, service, prayers, and witness.

Passing the Peace

When we pass the peace, we greet one another in the peace of Christ.

This practice reminds us that worship is not only personal—it is shared. We come together as brothers and sisters in Christ, reconciled to God and called to live in peace with one another.

Standing, Sitting, and Responding

During worship, we may stand, sit, sing, pray, listen, or respond together.

These movements help us participate with our whole selves—heart, mind, body, and spirit. They remind us that worship is active, not passive.

How These Practices Help Us Grow

Truth: Worship practices teach us the story of God’s grace.
Reason: They help us understand why faith matters.
Change: They shape how we live beyond Sunday morning.

Through worship, God forms us into people who love Him, love one another, and serve the world.

Prayer Connects Us to God

Prayer is more than something we do during worship. It is an ongoing conversation with God that continues throughout the week. Through prayer we praise God, confess our sins, give thanks, pray for others, seek guidance, and grow in our relationship with Christ.

Prayer helps connect worship to everyday life as we learn to trust God in every season and circumstance.
