Pentecost

A worship-inspired Pentecost image featuring symbols of the Holy Spirit, including a dove, flames, or radiant light. The image represents the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and the beginning of the Church's mission to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the world.

Pentecost: The Holy Spirit Comes With Power
The Holy Spirit filled the first followers of Jesus with courage, wisdom, and purpose. Pentecost marks the birth of the Church and reminds us that God still empowers His people today.

The Holy Spirit Comes With Power

Pentecost is the day we remember and celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus.

After Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, He told His disciples to wait for the promise of the Father. They were not left alone. God sent the Holy Spirit to fill them with power, courage, understanding, and purpose.

Pentecost reminds us that the Church was not built by human strength alone. The Church was born through the power of God.

What Happened at Pentecost?

The disciples were gathered together in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit came upon them.

Acts 2 describes the sound of a rushing wind, tongues as of fire, and people speaking in languages they had not learned. God was making the good news of Jesus known to people from many nations.

Peter stood up and preached about Jesus Christ — His life, death, resurrection, and Lordship. That day, many people believed, repented, were baptized, and became part of the growing community of faith.

Pentecost marks the beginning of the Church’s public witness.

Why Pentecost Matters

Pentecost teaches us that God’s Spirit is still at work.

The Holy Spirit helps us understand God’s Word, follow Jesus, pray, serve, love, forgive, and live with courage.

We do not live the Christian life by willpower alone. We live by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

The same Spirit who empowered the first disciples continues to guide and strengthen the Church today.

Pentecost and the Church

Pentecost reminds us that the Church is called to be a witness.

The disciples did not keep the good news to themselves. They were sent out to share the story of Jesus with courage and love.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Pentecost reminds us that we are called to love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We are called to be a beacon of Christ’s light in Pleasant Grove, western Birmingham, Jefferson County, and beyond.

Living Pentecost Today

Pentecost is not only something we remember. It is something we live.

We live Pentecost when we pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

We live Pentecost when we use our gifts to serve others.

We live Pentecost when we share the love of Jesus with our neighbors.

We live Pentecost when we become a community where neighbors become family.

A Simple Prayer

Holy Spirit, fill us with Your presence.
Give us courage to follow Jesus.
Give us wisdom to understand God’s Word.
Give us love for our neighbors.
Give us power to serve with joy.
Make us faithful witnesses of Christ.
Amen.
