Introduction

Maundy Thursday is one of the most meaningful nights of Holy Week. Christians remember the final evening Jesus shared with His disciples before the cross. On this night, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, shared the Last Supper, gave a new commandment, prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, and was betrayed and arrested.

It is a night filled with love, humility, sorrow, and holy purpose.

Many churches gather for worship, Holy Communion, prayer, and reflection as they prepare their hearts for Good Friday and Easter.

What Does “Maundy” Mean?

Jesus’ commandment in Scripture

The word Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, meaning command or mandate.

It refers to the words of Jesus in John 13:34 (NASB):

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you…”

Maundy Thursday means:

The Thursday of the New Commandment — Love one another as Jesus loved us.

GETHSEMANE PRAYER

Jesus prayed in the Garden

Jesus Prayed in Gethsemane

Jesus prayed in agony yet surrendered fully to the Father.
In the garden, Jesus chose surrender over escape.
Matthew 26:39:
This stained glass image recalls Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, where He surrendered to the Father’s will and prepared to face the cross.

“Yet not as I will, but as You will.”

  • 5. Jesus Was Betrayed and Arrested

What we treasure shapes the direction of our hearts.
The money bag symbolizes Judas’ betrayal for silver and calls us to reflect on what we value most. Maundy Thursday invites every heart back to Christ.

Jesus Was Betrayed and Arrested

Judas , stained glass

Judas arrived. Soldiers came. The path to the cross began. Even in betrayal, Jesus remained faithful, and the plan of redemption moved forward. This stained glass detail reminds us of Judas Iscariot, whose betrayal became part of the final events leading to the cross. Even in human brokenness, God’s redemptive plan continued.

Why Maundy Thursday Matters

WHY MAUNDY THURSDAY MATTERS

R — Reasons We Believe

Because Jesus showed us what love looks like.

Love serves.
Love sacrifices.
Love forgives.
Love obeys God even when costly.

Because Communion still speaks today.

Every time believers gather at the Lord’s Table, we remember grace, covenant, and the cross.

Because Jesus understands suffering.

He knows loneliness, betrayal, fear, and grief.

Because the Kingdom turns power upside down.

Jesus used a towel instead of a throne.
