Holy Wednesday | Meaning, Scriptures, and Reflection for Holy Week

Holy Wednesday | Meaning, Scriptures, and Reflection for Holy Week

Holy Wednesday is part of Holy Week, the day many Christians remember the growing shadow of the cross, the betrayal of Jesus, and God’s faithfulness even in dark moments. Explore scripture, reflection, and hope as we prepare for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.

Holy Wednesday: Hidden Choices and Open Hearts

Holy Week Lesson | Foundations of Faith | Growing in Christ

Palm Sunday brought praise. Holy Monday brought cleansing. Holy Tuesday brought truth and teaching. On Holy Wednesday, the tone becomes quieter and more personal.

This day is often called Spy Wednesday because Judas secretly arranged to betray Jesus.

While some hearts moved toward surrender, another heart moved toward compromise.

Holy Wednesday reminds us that many of life’s biggest decisions happen quietly, long before anyone else sees them.

This day invites us to ask:

What hidden choices are shaping my future?

Come and see.

What Is the GROW Framework?

At Pleasant Grove, we use a simple pathway for spiritual growth called GROW:

G – Ground in Scripture
Build life on God’s Word.

R – Reasons We Believe
Understand why our faith is trustworthy and true.

O – Obedience in Action
Put faith into practice through love, mercy, and service.

W – Walk It Out
Live daily with Jesus in the real world.

Holy Wednesday helps us GROW as disciples.

G – Ground in Scripture

God’s Word remains steady in uncertain moments.

Primary Scriptures

Matthew 26:1–16
Luke 22:1–6
John 12:1–8

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

Judas went to the chief priests and asked:

“What are you willing to give me?”

They offered him thirty pieces of silver.

From that moment, he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

A Contrast of Hearts

Scripture also shows another scene during this week: a woman poured costly perfume on Jesus in an act of love and worship.

One person gave generously.
Another calculated profit.

One heart surrendered.
Another heart drifted.

Holy Wednesday shows that what lives inside eventually becomes visible outside.

Quiet Decisions Matter

Not every turning point is public.

Some decisions happen in silence:

  • what we value
  • what we resent
  • what we hide
  • what we pursue
  • whom we trust

R – Reasons We Believe

Light still shining in dark times

  1. Jesus Knows the Heart

No motive is hidden from Christ.

He sees both devotion and betrayal.

  1. Small Compromises Become Larger Consequences

Judas did not fall in one moment.

Choices often build slowly over time.

  1. Worship Is Worth More Than Wealth

Money can be useful, but it makes a poor master.

Love for Christ is greater than silver.

  1. Grace Is Still Available

Holy Wednesday is a warning—but also an invitation.

Before the cross, mercy is still calling.

O – Obedience in Action

Call to prayer and faithfulness

Holy Wednesday asks:

What is quietly pulling my heart away from Jesus?

Possible answers:

  • greed
  • resentment
  • disappointment
  • secret habits
  • pride
  • bitterness
  • chasing approval
  • spiritual neglect

Practical Response This Week

Choose one step today:

  • confess something honestly to God
  • release resentment
  • simplify one unhealthy priority
  • give generously
  • choose worship over worry
  • ask for accountability
  • spend time in prayer before reacting

A Personal Checkup

Am I asking, “What can I get?”
Or asking, “What can I give?”

Am I moving toward Jesus… or drifting away quietly?

W – Walk It Out

Hope at dusk before dawn

Holy Week invites honesty.

Jesus does not shame us for struggle—He invites us back before compromise becomes captivity.

Let Him reshape:

  • your desires
  • your priorities
  • your motives
  • your habits
  • your loyalties

Family / Neighbor Challenge

Choose generosity today:

  • encourage someone discouraged
  • help without being asked
  • forgive a lingering hurt
  • share a meal
  • support someone in need
  • invite someone to worship

At Pleasant Grove, neighbors become family.

Beacon of Hope

No hidden place is too dark for Christ’s light.

Where repentance begins, hope rises.
