Holy Monday | Meaning, Scriptures, and Cleansing the Heart

Holy Monday: When Jesus Cleans House

Holy Monday is part of Holy Week, when many Christians remember Jesus cleansing the temple and calling people back to sincere worship. Holy Monday reminds us that Christ desires hearts devoted to God, lives that bear fruit, and faith that is genuine.

Holy Week Lesson | Foundations of Faith | Growing in Christ

Palm Sunday brought celebration, waving branches, and cries of Hosanna! But Holy Week quickly moves from public praise to personal examination.

On Holy Monday, Jesus entered the temple and confronted what did not belong there. This day reminds us that Jesus does not only come to be admired—He comes to transform.

Holy Monday invites us to ask:

What needs to change in me so worship can be real again?

Come and see.

What Is the GROW Framework?

At Pleasant Grove, we use a simple pathway for
spiritual growth called GROW:

G – Ground in Scripture
Build life on God’s Word.

R – Reasons We Believe
Understand why our faith is trustworthy and true.

O – Obedience in Action
Put faith into practice through love, mercy, and service.

W – Walk It Out
Live daily with Jesus in the real world.

Holy Monday helps us GROW as disciples.

What Is Holy Monday?

G – Ground in Scripture

Primary Scriptures

Matthew 21:12–17
Isaiah 56:7
Jeremiah 7:11

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

After entering Jerusalem, Jesus went into the temple courts and drove out those who were buying and selling there.

He overturned tables and declared:

“My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers.”

The temple was meant to be a place where people met with God. Instead, it had become crowded with distraction, exploitation, and misuse.

Then something beautiful happened.

The blind and the lame came to Jesus in the temple, and He healed them.

Children praised Him.

Holy Monday shows both judgment and mercy.

Why Holy Monday Matters

R – Reasons We Believe

  1. Jesus Cares About True Worship

Jesus was not angry about activity. He was confronting corruption.

Outward religion without inward devotion grieves the heart of God.

  1. Jesus Has Authority to Correct What Is Wrong

He did not ask permission to restore holiness.

Jesus still has authority to confront what is broken in us.

  1. Jesus Makes Room for the Hurting

After clearing the space, the hurting came near.

When clutter is removed, healing can begin.

  1. Children Often See Clearly

While leaders resisted Jesus, children praised Him.

Sometimes simple faith sees what pride misses.

How to Observe Holy Monday

O – Obedience in Action

Holy Monday asks:

What tables need turning over in my life?

Possible answers:

  • busyness that crowds out prayer
  • bitterness that hardens the heart
  • greed or misplaced priorities
  • entertainment replacing worship
  • pride that resists correction
  • hidden sin
  • neglecting people in need

Practical Response This Week

Choose one step today:

  • set aside time for prayer
  • forgive someone
  • give generously
  • apologize where needed
  • remove one unhealthy habit
  • help someone overlooked
  • spend quiet time with God

A Personal Checkup

Am I using God… or truly worshiping God?

Am I too crowded inside to notice who needs love?

Living with a Cleansed Heart

W – Walk It Out

Holy Week is not only about remembering what happened then. It is about allowing Jesus to work now.

Let Him cleanse:

  • your thoughts
  • your schedule
  • your motives
  • your relationships

Family / Neighbor Challenge

Who around you needs room made for them?

  • invite someone to church
  • welcome a visitor
  • check on a lonely neighbor
  • help someone burdened
  • make space at your table

At Pleasant Grove, neighbors become family.

Beacon of Hope

Jesus does not cleanse to condemn.

He cleanses to restore.

He clears space for prayer, healing, joy, and new life.
