He Promised Power

Sunlight breaking through clouds / radiant sky.

God’s promise was on the way.

Easter Season: From Resurrection to Pentecost

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave His followers a promise. He told them not to rush ahead in their own strength, but to wait for the gift the Father had promised—the Holy Spirit.

The disciples had seen the resurrection. They had heard Jesus teach. They had received their mission. But they still needed divine power to live faithfully and witness boldly.

Jesus knew they could not fulfill their calling alone.

He promised power for:

  • Courage in fearful moments
  • Strength for obedience
  • Wisdom for decisions
  • Boldness in witness
  • Unity among believers
  • Endurance in trials
  • Fruitful ministry
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe God still equips His people through the Holy Spirit today.
Disciples gathered in upper room praying

They waited in prayer, not panic.

Why Did They Need Power?

The disciples were ordinary people facing an extraordinary mission.

They would need to:

  • Share the gospel in a hostile world
  • Stand firm under pressure
  • Love difficult people
  • Lead the growing church
  • Resist temptation
  • Persevere through hardship
  • Depend on God daily

Jesus never intended them to serve through human effort alone.

GROW Through Promised Power

G — Grounded in Scripture

Key Scriptures

  • Luke 24:49
  • Acts 1:4–8
  • John 14:16–17
  • John 16:7
  • Zechariah 4:6
  • Ephesians 3:16

“I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
— Luke 24:49 NASB

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”
— Acts 1:8 NASB

God’s calling comes with God’s enabling.

R — Reasons We Believe

The early church was transformed not by wealth, influence, or human strategy, but by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Fearful disciples became bold witnesses.
Ordinary believers impacted cities and nations.
Weak people were strengthened for faithful service.

This reminds us that the source of Christian power is God, not ourselves.

O — Obedience in Action

Open hands in prayer / surrender.

Power begins with dependence.

Because Jesus promised power, we are called to depend on Him.

We respond by:

  • Praying before acting
  • Seeking God’s wisdom
  • Trusting the Spirit daily
  • Serving with humility
  • Using our gifts faithfully
  • Sharing the gospel courageously
  • Remembering we are not alone

Dependence is not weakness—it is wisdom.

W — Walk It Out

We walk this truth daily when we:

  • Pray for strength each morning
  • Pause before reacting
  • Trust God in weakness
  • Serve even when tired
  • Step out in faith when nervous
  • Ask the Spirit for guidance
  • Keep going when discouraged

God often works most powerfully through surrendered people.

What This Means Today

Jesus still promises power.

Power to face hard days.

Power to speak hope.
Power to keep going.

You may feel weak, but weakness is where God often shows strength.
