He Opened Eyes

Road at sunrise / path with warm light.

Sometimes clarity comes while we are walking

Easter Season: From Resurrection to Pentecost

After the resurrection, Jesus met two discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus. They were confused, heartbroken, and unable to understand all that had happened. As they walked, Jesus came near, opened the Scriptures to them, and later opened their eyes to recognize Him.

The risen Christ did more than appear—He helped people see clearly.

He opened their eyes to:

  • The truth of Scripture
  • The meaning of His suffering and resurrection
  • His presence beside them
  • Hope beyond disappointment
  • A renewed purpose for their lives
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe Jesus still opens eyes today.

He walked beside them in their confusion.

Why Do We Need Our Eyes Opened?

Sometimes people can look but not truly see.

We may see:

  • Problems but not God’s faithfulness
  • Pain but not purpose
  • Delay but not timing
  • Circumstances but not Christ’s presence
  • Scripture words but not deeper truth

Jesus opens spiritual eyes so hearts can understand and faith can grow.

GROW Through Opened Eyes

G — Grounded in Scripture

Open Bible with sunlight.

God’s Word opens hearts and minds.

Key Scriptures

  • Luke 24:13–35
  • Psalm 119:18
  • Ephesians 1:18
  • John 9:25
  • 2 Corinthians 4:6

“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him.”
— Luke 24:31 NASB

“Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law.”
— Psalm 119:18 NASB

The road to Emmaus reminds us that Jesus often walks with us before we realize it.

R — Reasons We Believe

The disciples on the road to Emmaus were changed after Jesus opened the Scriptures and revealed Himself.

Their sadness turned to joy.
Their confusion turned to clarity.
Their slow hearts began to burn with renewed faith.

This shows us that Jesus transforms people through truth and presence.

O — Obedience in Action

Because Jesus opens eyes, we are called to respond.

We respond by:

  • Reading Scripture prayerfully
  • Asking God for wisdom
  • Listening for truth
  • Paying attention to God’s activity around us
  • Sharing what Christ has shown us
  • Walking in renewed faith

When eyes are opened, lives are changed.

W — Walk It Out

We walk this truth daily when we:

  • Trust God when answers are delayed
  • Ask Him to reveal truth
  • Look for His presence in ordinary moments
  • Learn from Scripture consistently
  • Refuse to stay discouraged
  • Move forward with fresh faith

Sometimes understanding comes while we are walking, not while we are waiting.
