Walking the road… not yet realizing who is beside them.
He Opened Eyes
Seeing Jesus on the Road
Scripture Focus: Luke 24:13–35; Luke 24:45; John 20:16; 2 Corinthians 4:6
Series: Easter Season: From Resurrection to Pentecost
What if Jesus has been walking with you… and you just haven’t recognized Him yet?
After the resurrection, Jesus did more than appear to His followers—He helped them see.
On the road to Emmaus, two disciples walked with Him, talked with Him, and listened to Him—but did not recognize Him at first.
Then came the moment of grace:
“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him…”
— Luke 24:31 (NASB)
Jesus still opens eyes today. He helps us recognize His presence, understand His Word, and respond with faith.
GROW: A Simple Way to Go Deeper
G — Ground in Scripture
In Luke 24, two disciples were walking away from Jerusalem, confused and disappointed. They had heard reports of the empty tomb, but they did not yet understand what God was doing.
Jesus came near and walked with them.
He listened to their questions. He spoke into their confusion. He explained the Scriptures and showed how the story of God pointed to Him.
Later, when He broke the bread, everything changed—their eyes were opened.
Jesus also appeared to His disciples and:
“Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.”
— Luke 24:45 (NASB)
R — Reasons We Believe
The resurrection was not just something to witness—it was something to understand.
Jesus helped His followers connect what they had experienced with what God had already promised. As He revealed truth, their confidence grew.
Truth: Jesus reveals Himself.
Reason: We don’t always recognize Him right away.
Change: When our eyes are opened, everything changes.
O — Obedience in Action
If Jesus is the One who opens eyes, then our response begins with a simple step: paying attention.
We can pray:
“Lord, help me recognize Your presence.”
“Open my heart to Your Word.”
“Help me see what You are doing.”
He often meets us in quiet moments—when we slow down enough to notice.
W — Walk It Out
This week, be intentional about noticing where God may already be at work:
- When you read Scripture
• When you pray
• When you gather in worship
• When you have a meaningful conversation
• When you feel peace in the middle of uncertainty
• When you see a need and feel prompted to respond
As you begin to recognize Him, let that awareness shape how you live—how you love, how you serve, and how you trust.
A Deeper Reflection
Jesus meets people personally.
Like Mary at the tomb, recognition came in a moment that was deeply personal:
“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’”
— John 20:16 (NASB)
Jesus also brings clarity.
He doesn’t leave us in confusion—He helps us understand what is true and trustworthy through His Word.
And when our eyes are opened, something shifts.
We don’t just see differently—we begin to live differently.
