He Ascended

Cross against bright sky / clouds / sunrise.

The risen Christ reigns in glory.

Easter Season: From Resurrection to Pentecost

After appearing to His followers, teaching them, and preparing them for mission, Jesus ascended into heaven. The ascension was not the end of His work—it was the beginning of a new chapter in God’s plan.

The risen Christ was lifted up before His disciples and taken from their sight. Yet He did not abandon them. He returned to the Father, reigns as Lord, intercedes for His people, and continues to lead His church.

The ascension reminds us that Jesus is not absent—He is exalted.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we celebrate the ascended Christ who still reigns with power, grace, and authority.

What Does the Ascension Mean?

Bright clouds with sunlight breaking through.

Lift your eyes above present troubles.

The ascension means:

  • Jesus completed His earthly ministry
  • Jesus returned to the Father in glory
  • Jesus reigns as Lord over all things
  • Jesus intercedes for believers
  • Jesus prepares the way for the Holy Spirit
  • Jesus still rules and guides His church

The same Jesus who walked with His disciples now reigns over heaven and earth.

GROW Through the Ascension

G — Grounded in Scripture

Taken up before their eyes.

Key Scriptures

  • Luke 24:50–53
  • Acts 1:6–11
  • Ephesians 1:20–23
  • Hebrews 7:25
  • Romans 8:34
  • Philippians 2:9–11

“While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.”
— Luke 24:51 NASB

“This Jesus… will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”
— Acts 1:11 NASB

The ascension is both a promise and a proclamation: Jesus reigns now and will come again.

R — Reasons We Believe

The ascension gives believers confidence because Christ is not defeated or distant.

He is alive.
He is reigning.
He is praying for His people.
He is still at work.

The disciples did not leave the ascension in despair. Scripture says they returned with great joy. They understood that Jesus’ reign was good news.

O — Obedience in Action

Because Jesus reigns, we are called to live under His lordship.

We respond by:

  • Trusting His authority
  • Submitting our lives to Him
  • Worshiping with joy
  • Living with courage
  • Serving faithfully
  • Waiting expectantly for His return
  • Sharing His kingdom hope

When Christ is King, every part of life matters.

W — Walk It Out

We walk this truth daily when we:

  • Remember Jesus is over every problem
  • Pray knowing He hears and intercedes
  • Live confidently in uncertain times
  • Worship above worry
  • Obey even when culture resists Christ
  • Keep eternal perspective

The ascension lifts our eyes above temporary circumstances.
