Music, Worship, and Creative Expressions of Faith

Music has been an important part of worship at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church for generations.

Each Sunday our congregation joins together in singing traditional hymns, listening to choir anthems, and worshiping through music led by our choir, pianist, organist, and other gifted musicians.

We believe music is much more than a performance—it is an act of worship that draws us closer to God, proclaims the truths of Scripture, and unites believers in praise.

Throughout the year, our Music and Worship Arts Ministry includes congregational singing, choir ministry, piano and organ music, seasonal worship celebrations, guest musicians, hymn sings, concerts, and creative expressions of faith that encourage spiritual growth.

Music in Worship

Music is an important part of every worship service at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Through congregational singing, choir anthems, piano and organ music, and special musical offerings, we seek to glorify God and prepare our hearts to hear His Word.

Our worship reflects the rich musical heritage of the church while inviting everyone to participate. We sing traditional hymns that have strengthened the faith of believers for generations. The words to each hymn are projected on the screen, and hymnals are also available with page numbers announced for those who prefer to sing from the hymnal. During services such as Holy Communion and other congregational responses, the words may also be found in the United Methodist Hymnal, allowing everyone to worship together with confidence.

Our choir serves as a ministry of worship, leading the congregation through anthems and special music that complement the Scripture readings and sermon each week. Choir members rehearse on Sundays at 11:30 AM, immediately following the worship service, and new singers are always welcome.

Worship is enriched by both piano and organ, which accompany congregational singing and provide music throughout the service. Throughout the year, we also enjoy guest vocalists, instrumental musicians, seasonal music for Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and other special occasions. From time to time, we host hymn sings, sacred concerts, and guest musical groups that share their gifts with our congregation and the surrounding community.

Above all, we believe music is not a performance—it is an offering of praise to God. Whether leading, singing, playing an instrument, or quietly joining in from the congregation, every voice and every gift can become an act of worship that honors Christ and encourages His people.

Congregational Singing

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe worship is something we do together. Congregational singing has long been a treasured part of our worship, bringing voices of all ages together in praise, thanksgiving, prayer, and proclamation of God’s truth.

Each Sunday we sing traditional hymns that have encouraged and inspired Christians for generations. To help everyone participate, the words to the hymns are displayed on the screen, and hymnals are available in the pews for those who prefer to sing from the United Methodist Hymnal. Page numbers are announced before each hymn, making it easy for everyone to follow along.

During Holy Communion and other parts of the worship service, the responses and liturgy may also be found in the hymnal, allowing the congregation to participate fully in these meaningful acts of worship.

Whether you know every verse by heart or are singing these hymns for the first time, you are invited to lift your voice with the congregation. We believe every voice matters. Together we sing not as performers, but as God’s people—encouraging one another, proclaiming our faith, and offering our praise to Him.

Choir Ministry

The choir at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church serves an important role in leading worship and encouraging the congregation through music. Each week, choir members prepare anthems and special music that complement the Scripture readings, reinforce the message of the sermon, and help create an atmosphere of worship.

Before each Sunday worship service, the choir gathers at approximately 10:10 AM to review the morning’s music, pray together, and make final preparations before leading the congregation in worship.

Our choir sings regularly during Sunday morning worship and offers seasonal music throughout the year for occasions such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. The selection of music reflects the gifts and talents of our singers and musicians, allowing the choir to faithfully lead worship in ways that are both meaningful and appropriate for our congregation.

Choir rehearsal is held each Sunday at 11:30 AM, immediately following the worship service. This time together allows members to prepare upcoming music, develop their musical skills, and enjoy fellowship while serving alongside one another.

More than a musical group, our choir is a ministry of worship. Through prayer, preparation, and song, choir members use their God-given gifts to glorify God, strengthen the faith of the congregation, and help lead others into the presence of God.

If you enjoy singing and would like to use your musical gifts in service to God, we invite you to consider becoming part of our choir. Whether you have years of experience or simply a desire to praise God through music, we would be happy to welcome you.

Seasonal Worship Music

Throughout the Christian year, music helps tell the story of God’s saving work and invites us to experience the meaning of each season more deeply. At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, our worship music reflects the changing seasons of the Church Year, helping prepare our hearts as we celebrate the life, death, resurrection, and promised return of Jesus Christ.

During Advent, we sing hymns that express hope and anticipation as we prepare for the coming of Christ. At Christmas, joyful carols proclaim the birth of our Savior and celebrate God’s gift to the world.

The reflective season of Lent calls us to repentance, prayer, and spiritual renewal through music that encourages thoughtful worship. During Holy Week, our music helps us remember Christ’s sacrifice, leading us from the solemnity of the cross to the joy of Easter, when we celebrate the resurrection with songs of victory, hope, and new life.

Throughout the year, we also enjoy music for Pentecost, Thanksgiving, patriotic observances, and other special worship services and church celebrations. Depending on the gifts and availability of our musicians and singers, these services may include choir anthems, congregational hymns, instrumental music, guest musicians, or special musical presentations.

Each season offers a unique opportunity to worship God through music, reflect on His faithfulness, and grow in our understanding of the Christian faith. As the seasons change, the message remains the same—God is faithful, Christ is Lord, and our songs continue to proclaim His love and grace to every generation.

Guest Musicians and Special Music

Throughout the year, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church is blessed by a variety of guest musicians who share their gifts as part of our worship and special events. These musical offerings enrich our services, encourage the congregation, and remind us that God can be glorified through many different musical talents and styles.

From time to time, soloists, instrumentalists, vocal ensembles, and community music groups join us in worship. We have also been blessed by groups such as SonRise, whose ministry through music has inspired and encouraged our congregation.

Guest musicians may participate during Sunday worship, seasonal celebrations, special services, hymn sings, concerts, or other church events. Whether presenting a familiar hymn, a sacred anthem, an instrumental selection, or a personal testimony through song, each musical offering is intended to direct our hearts toward Christ.

We are grateful for every musician who shares their God-given gifts with our church family. Their ministry reminds us that music has the power to encourage faith, proclaim the gospel, offer comfort, and unite believers in worship.

At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we view every musical offering—whether by our own choir, a guest soloist, or a visiting group—not as a performance, but as an act of worship that brings glory to God and strengthens His people.

Hymn Sings

From time to time, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church gathers for special Hymn Sings, offering an opportunity to enjoy the rich heritage of Christian music in a relaxed and meaningful setting. These gatherings bring people together to sing familiar hymns, share memories, and worship through songs that have strengthened the faith of believers for generations.

Our Hymn Sings are often planned around special seasons or occasions. During Christmas, we may gather to sing beloved Christmas carols and hymns that celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Around Independence Day, we may enjoy patriotic hymns and songs that express gratitude for our nation while remembering that our highest allegiance is to Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. At other times throughout the year, we may focus on favorite hymns chosen by members of the congregation or songs that reflect a particular theme or season.

These gatherings are not performances—they are opportunities for everyone to participate. Whether you know every verse by heart or simply enjoy listening and singing along, Hymn Sings provide a joyful time of worship, fellowship, and encouragement.

Many of these treasured hymns have been sung by Christians for generations, reminding us of God’s faithfulness and connecting us with the rich musical heritage of the Church. We invite you to join us as we lift our voices together in praise and thanksgiving to God.
