The Lord’s Prayer: A Pattern for Prayer
Learning to Pray the Way Jesus Taught
The Lord’s Prayer teaches us not only what to pray, but how to trust, worship, forgive, and live each day with God at the center.
Some prayers stay with us for a lifetime. The Lord’s Prayer is one of them.
Spoken in worship services, whispered beside hospital beds, prayed around family tables, and remembered in quiet moments of fear and hope, these words have guided believers for generations.
Yet the Lord’s Prayer is more than words to repeat.
It is a pattern for life.
Jesus gave this prayer during the Sermon on the Mount, teaching His followers not only what to pray, but how to trust, worship, forgive, and live each day with God at the center.
The Lord’s Prayer reminds us:
- God is a loving Father.
- God’s name is holy.
- God’s kingdom matters more than our own plans.
- God provides for daily needs.
- God offers forgiveness and calls us to forgive others.
- God guides us through temptation and protects us from evil.
- God alone deserves glory, honor, and praise.

Many churches pray “forgive us our trespasses,” while others use “forgive us our debts.” Both expressions reflect the biblical call to seek God’s forgiveness and to forgive others.

The Lord’s Prayer is more than a prayer to memorize—it is a guide for daily prayer.
As you pray, consider using each phrase as a starting point:
- Begin by praising God as your Heavenly Father.
- Worship His holy name.
- Ask that His will be done in your life.
- Trust Him to provide today’s needs.
- Confess your sins and receive His forgiveness.
- Forgive those who have wronged you.
- Ask for strength to resist temptation.
- Trust God to protect and guide you each day.
Many Christians use this pattern every morning as a way to focus their hearts on God before beginning the day.
