Volunteers work side by side transforming recycled plastic bags into sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness. Through service, fellowship, and compassion, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church seeks to share Christ’s love with neighbors in need.
Serving God by Serving Our Neighbors
At Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, we believe that faith grows as we worship, study God’s Word, pray, and serve others.
Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love God and love our neighbors. One of the most meaningful ways we live out that calling is by serving others with willing hands and joyful hearts. Whether we are welcoming visitors, preparing meals, caring for those in need, supporting worship, or participating in community outreach, every act of service becomes an opportunity to share the love of Christ.
You do not need special skills, years of experience, or unlimited time to make a difference. God has given every believer unique gifts, talents, and abilities that can be used to bless others. Whether you can serve every week or only a few times each year, there is a place for you at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
Why We Serve
Christian service is more than volunteering—it is an expression of our faith.
Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). As His followers, we seek to follow His example by caring for others, encouraging one another, and sharing God’s love through both simple and significant acts of service.
Some ministries are highly visible. Others happen quietly behind the scenes. Every act of service matters because every person matters to God.
As we serve, we grow spiritually, build lasting friendships, strengthen our church family, and become a beacon of Christ’s light in Pleasant Grove, western Birmingham, and beyond.
Ways You Can Serve
There are many opportunities to serve at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
You may enjoy welcoming guests on Sunday mornings, singing in the choir, helping with worship services, teaching children or adults, preparing food, assisting with special events, supporting technology and communications, serving through outreach ministries, helping with seasonal projects, or encouraging others through ministries of care.
Some opportunities happen every week. Others take place monthly or only during special events and seasonal ministries. Whatever your schedule or experience, there are meaningful ways to serve.

Every ministry offers a unique opportunity to serve others while sharing the love of Christ.
Serving in Worship
Sunday worship is made possible through many faithful volunteers.
You may serve as a greeter, usher, liturgist, acolyte, choir member, musician, communion server, media volunteer, altar guild helper, or worship preparation volunteer.
Each person helps create a welcoming environment where people can worship God, hear His Word, and experience Christian community.
Serving Through Care and Encouragement
Some of the most meaningful ministries happen quietly.
Volunteers prepare prayer shawls, write encouragement cards, visit homebound members, prepare meals, pray for others, support caregivers, and offer compassion during difficult seasons of life.
These acts of kindness remind people that they are loved by God and remembered by their church family.
Serving Through Outreach
Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church seeks to be a beacon of Christ’s love throughout our community.
Volunteers help care for the Blessing Box and Little Library, make sleeping mats for the homeless, collect food and supplies, participate in mission projects, support seasonal outreach efforts, and partner with organizations that serve our neighbors.
Through outreach, we put our faith into action and share God’s love in practical ways.
Serving Through Fellowship and Hospitality
Many volunteers help create the warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes Pleasant Grove feel like home.
Whether preparing food, decorating for events, setting up tables, greeting guests, taking photographs, cleaning up afterward, or simply offering a friendly smile, every act of hospitality helps people feel welcomed, valued, and loved.
Hospitality is one of the simplest—and most powerful—ways to share the love of Christ.

That’s perfectly okay.
Many of our volunteers began by simply asking, “How can I help?”
You do not have to know exactly where you fit before getting involved. We’d be happy to answer your questions, introduce you to ministry leaders, and help you find an opportunity that matches your interests, gifts, and schedule.

What Can You Expect?
When you volunteer, you won’t be expected to know everything or do everything on your first day.
Someone will explain the ministry, introduce you to other volunteers, answer your questions, and help you learn as you go. Most ministries have experienced volunteers who are happy to work alongside newcomers.
Whether you help with one special event or become involved in an ongoing ministry, you’ll discover that serving is a wonderful way to meet new people, build lasting friendships, grow in your faith, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
