Lesson 3: Pentecost — The Holy Spirit Comes

Acts 2:1–13

Season One: Life in the Spirit

Introduction

The believers had waited.

They had prayed.

They had trusted God’s promise.

Now the promise was about to be fulfilled.

The Day of Pentecost marks one of the most important moments in the history of the Church. What Jesus promised in Acts 1 became reality in Acts 2 as the Holy Spirit came upon the believers with power.

Fearful followers became bold witnesses.

A small group of disciples became the beginning of a worldwide movement.

The Church was born.

Acts 2 shows us that the Christian life is not meant to be lived through human strength alone. God gives His people the presence and power of the Holy Spirit to guide, strengthen, equip, and transform them for His mission.

Scripture Reference

Acts 2:1–13 (NASB)

Key Verse

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.” — Acts 2:4 (NASB)

Historical Background

Pentecost was one of the major Jewish festivals celebrated fifty days after Passover.

Jews from throughout the Roman Empire traveled to Jerusalem to worship and celebrate.

What appeared to be an ordinary festival became the moment God chose to pour out His Spirit upon believers.

The timing was significant.

People from many nations were already gathered in Jerusalem. As the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to speak in different languages, visitors from many regions heard the message of God in their own native tongues.

The gospel was immediately revealed to be a message for all people.

GROW Framework

Grounded in Scripture

The Believers Gather Together

(Acts 2:1)

The disciples were gathered together when the Holy Spirit came.

The Church began in community.

God often works through His people when they gather in worship, prayer, and unity.

The Sound of a Mighty Wind

(Acts 2:2)

Luke describes a sound like a violent rushing wind filling the house.

Throughout Scripture, wind often symbolizes God’s presence and power.

The sound announced that something extraordinary was happening.

God was moving among His people.

Tongues Like Fire

(Acts 2:3)

Tongues resembling fire appeared and rested upon each believer.

Fire often symbolizes God’s holiness, presence, and purification.

Unlike the Old Testament, where God’s presence was often associated with a specific place, God’s Spirit was now dwelling within His people.

The presence of God was no longer limited to a temple.

Believers themselves would become temples of the Holy Spirit.

Reasons We Believe

The Holy Spirit Is God’s Presence with His People

The Holy Spirit is not merely an influence or force.

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, actively working in the lives of believers.

God’s presence now dwells within His people.

The Church Is Empowered by God

The disciples were ordinary people.

Their effectiveness came not from talent or status but from the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Church still depends on God’s power today.

The Gospel Is for Everyone

People from many nations heard the message in their own languages.

From the very beginning, God demonstrated that the gospel was intended for all people.

The mission of the Church has always been global.

God’s Promises Are Faithful

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit.

God fulfilled that promise exactly as He said He would.

Pentecost reminds us that God can be trusted.

Obedience in Action

The coming of the Holy Spirit transformed the disciples from fearful followers into courageous witnesses.

Believers today are called to:

Depend upon the Holy Spirit daily.

Seek God’s guidance through prayer.

Share the hope of Jesus Christ with others.

Use spiritual gifts in service to God.

Live faithfully and courageously.

Trust God’s power rather than relying solely on personal abilities.

Walk It Out

Consider these questions:

What stands out most to you about Pentecost?

Why do you think God chose people from many nations to hear the gospel that day?

How does the Holy Spirit help believers today?

What fears or challenges might God be calling you to face with greater faith?

How can you become more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit?

Possible Responses

You may recognize that God often works through ordinary people who are willing to trust Him.

You may realize that God’s mission extends far beyond your own community.

You may discover areas where you need to rely more fully on God’s strength and guidance.

Understanding Pentecost

Pentecost was not simply a dramatic event.

It was the fulfillment of God’s promise and the beginning of a new chapter in God’s relationship with His people.

The Holy Spirit came to empower believers, unite the Church, and equip God’s people for mission.

What began in Jerusalem continues today.

Every Christian is invited to live a Spirit-filled life marked by faith, worship, service, prayer, and witness.

Living the Message

The same Holy Spirit who empowered the disciples at Pentecost continues to work in believers today.

The Spirit guides us.

The Spirit comforts us.

The Spirit convicts us.

The Spirit strengthens us.

The Spirit equips us to serve Christ and share His love with the world.

Pentecost reminds us that God never intended for His people to follow Him alone.

He provides His presence and power every step of the way.
