Life in the Spirit: Season One:

Lesson 2: Waiting Together

A group of believers gathered together in prayer and fellowship, representing the disciples and early followers of Jesus waiting in Jerusalem after His ascension. The image symbolizes unity, prayer, trust, spiritual preparation, and the importance of Christian community.

Waiting Together in Prayer
Before the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, the believers gathered in unity, devoted themselves to prayer, and trusted God’s promise. Their faithfulness prepared them for the mission ahead.

For believers, this symbolizes the faithful waiting, prayer, and trust demonstrated by the disciples before the coming of the Holy Spirit.

1:2: Waiting Together

Scripture Reference- Acts 1:12–26

Introduction

Jesus had ascended into heaven.

The disciples had received His instructions.

The promise of the Holy Spirit was coming.

But it had not come yet.

The followers of Jesus found themselves in a season between promise and fulfillment. They could have scattered, returned to their former lives, or tried to move ahead on their own. Instead, they did something important.

They stayed together.

They prayed together.

They waited together.

Acts 1:12–26 teaches us that God often prepares His people through seasons of prayer, unity, patience, and faithfulness before launching them into greater ministry. Before Pentecost transformed the Church, God first formed a praying community.

This lesson reminds us that spiritual growth rarely happens alone. God often works through faithful communities that seek Him together.

Scripture Reference

Acts 1:12–26 (NASB)

Key Verse

“These all were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.” — Acts 1:14 (NASB)

Historical Background

After Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives, the disciples returned to Jerusalem as He instructed them.

The Feast of Pentecost was approaching, and Jerusalem was filling with visitors from throughout the Roman world.

About 120 believers gathered together. This group included the apostles, women who had followed Jesus, Mary the mother of Jesus, and even Jesus’ brothers, who had once doubted Him.

The Church had not yet been empowered by the Holy Spirit, but God was already preparing His people.

This period of waiting became a season of prayer, unity, and spiritual readiness.

GROW Framework

Grounded in Scripture

The Disciples Return to Jerusalem

(Acts 1:12–13)

The disciples obeyed Jesus’ instructions and returned to Jerusalem.

Their obedience demonstrated trust.

They did not fully understand what would happen next, but they trusted Christ enough to follow His directions.

Faith often means obeying before we see the outcome.

A Community United in Prayer

(Acts 1:14)

Luke emphasizes that the believers were continually devoted to prayer.

Prayer was not an occasional activity.

It became the foundation of the early Church.

Notice who gathered together:

The apostles

The women who followed Jesus

Mary, the mother of Jesus

Jesus’ brothers

People from different backgrounds and experiences were united by their faith in Christ.

Before the Church experienced power, it experienced unity.

Before Pentecost came prayer.

God’s Work Continues

(Acts 1:15–20)

Peter stood among the believers and addressed the situation left by Judas Iscariot’s betrayal and death.

The loss of Judas was painful and tragic.

Yet Peter reminded the believers that God’s purposes had not failed.

Even difficult circumstances could not stop God’s plan.

Throughout Scripture, God continues His work despite human failure.

Choosing Matthias

(Acts 1:21–26)

The apostles recognized the need to restore the number of witnesses among the Twelve.

Two qualified men were identified:

Joseph called Barsabbas

Matthias

The believers prayed before making their decision.

Rather than relying solely on human wisdom, they sought God’s guidance.

Matthias was chosen and joined the eleven apostles.

The early Church understood that leadership should be approached prayerfully and faithfully.

Reasons We Believe

God Works Through Community

Christian faith was never intended to be lived in isolation.

The believers gathered together because they needed one another.

God often strengthens His people through worship, fellowship, prayer, and encouragement.

Prayer Prepares Us for God’s Work

Before the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, the believers devoted themselves to prayer.

Prayer prepares our hearts to receive God’s guidance and power.

God’s Plans Are Not Defeated by Human Failure

Judas’ betrayal was heartbreaking, but it did not stop God’s mission.

God’s purposes continue even when people fail.

This truth offers hope to every believer.

Spiritual Leadership Matters

The apostles recognized the importance of faithful leadership within the Church.

God calls leaders to serve with humility, prayer, and faithfulness.

Obedience in Action

The believers did not waste their waiting.

They used their time to pray, encourage one another, and prepare for what God would do next.

We can follow their example by:

Participating in worship regularly

Praying with other believers

Encouraging one another

Trusting God during uncertain seasons

Seeking God’s guidance before making important decisions

Serving faithfully while waiting for future opportunities

Walk It Out

Consider these questions:

Why do you think the believers devoted themselves to prayer during this season of waiting?

What does this passage teach about Christian community?

How has God used other believers to encourage you during difficult times?

What important decisions in your life need prayerful discernment?

How can you become more connected to the life of the Church?

Possible Responses

You may realize that waiting becomes easier when you walk through it with other believers.

You may discover that prayer often changes us before it changes our circumstances.

You may recognize areas where God is inviting you to become more involved in worship, fellowship, study, or service.

Living the Message

The early believers did not know what Pentecost would look like.

They did not know how quickly the Church would grow.

They did not know what challenges lay ahead.

What they did know was this:

God had made a promise.

Jesus was alive.

The Church belonged to Him.

So they prayed.

They waited.

They trusted.

And they stayed together.

The same principles still guide believers today.

When we face uncertainty, God calls us to remain faithful, pray continually, encourage one another, and trust His timing.

Faith, Prayer, and Community

Acts 1 reminds us that God often prepares His people in community before sending them into ministry.

The Church is more than a gathering place.

It is a family of believers learning, growing, serving, and following Christ together.

As neighbors become family, we discover that God often does His greatest work through a community united in faith and prayer.
