James 1:22–25; Colossians 3:12–17

Season 5: Living the Faith

Introduction

Faith is more than something we believe.

Faith is something we live.

The early Christians quickly learned that following Jesus affected every area of life. Their faith influenced how they treated others, handled difficulties, made decisions, worked, spoke, forgave, and served.

The New Testament letters repeatedly remind believers that Christianity is not simply about attending worship or knowing Scripture.

Faith is meant to shape everyday living.

James challenges believers to become “doers of the word” rather than merely hearers. Paul teaches that followers of Christ should reflect His character in their relationships and daily actions.

This lesson explores what it means to live out faith in practical ways.

Scripture References

James 1:22 (NASB)

“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.”

Colossians 3:17 (NASB)

“Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus…”

Historical Background

The early Church lived in a world that often opposed Christian values.

Believers faced challenges in their homes, workplaces, communities, and relationships.

The apostles taught that faith was not confined to worship gatherings.

Christian faith was intended to influence every part of life.

The letters of James and Paul provided practical guidance for living as disciples of Jesus in everyday circumstances.

Those teachings remain relevant today.

GROW Framework

Grounded in Scripture

Doers of the Word

(James 1:22–25)

James teaches that hearing God’s Word is not enough.

Followers of Christ are called to put God’s truth into practice.

Knowledge without obedience produces little spiritual growth.

Faith becomes visible when believers apply biblical truth to daily life.

The goal is not merely learning Scripture.

The goal is living Scripture.

Putting on Christlike Character

(Colossians 3:12–14)

Paul encourages believers to clothe themselves with:

Compassion

Kindness

Humility

Gentleness

Patience

Forgiveness

Love

These qualities reflect the character of Jesus.

As believers grow in faith, their attitudes and actions increasingly resemble Christ.

Letting Christ Shape Relationships

(Colossians 3:13–15)

Christian faith affects how people treat one another.

Paul emphasizes forgiveness, peace, and unity.

Relationships become opportunities to demonstrate God’s grace.

Following Jesus changes how we respond to conflict, disappointment, and misunderstandings.

Living for God’s Glory

(Colossians 3:17)

Paul writes:

“Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Faith extends beyond church activities.

Work.

Family life.

Friendships.

Service.

Conversations.

Every area of life can become an opportunity to honor God.

Reasons We Believe

Faith Produces Action

Genuine faith influences behavior.

What we believe affects how we live.

Character Matters

God is not only interested in what believers know.

He also cares about who they are becoming.

Relationships Reflect the Gospel

The way Christians treat others provides a witness to God’s love and grace.

Everyday Life Is Ministry

Following Christ involves more than church activities.

Everyday actions can reflect God’s presence and purpose.

Obedience in Action

Faith in daily life challenges believers to ask:

Do my actions reflect my beliefs?

How do I treat people who are difficult to love?

Am I demonstrating kindness, patience, and forgiveness?

How can I honor God through my work and daily responsibilities?

What practical step of obedience is God calling me to take?

Christian growth becomes visible through everyday choices.

Walk It Out

Consider these questions:

Why do you think James emphasizes action as well as belief?

Which Christlike quality is most challenging for you?

How can faith influence ordinary daily activities?

What opportunities do you have to demonstrate God’s love this week?

How can your actions point others toward Christ?

Possible Responses

You may identify areas where your faith can become more visible.

You may recognize opportunities to show grace and forgiveness.

You may discover simple ways to serve others and honor God in everyday life.

Living the Message

Faith is not limited to Sunday mornings.

Faith shapes Monday through Saturday as well.

It influences how we:

Speak to others

Respond to challenges

Serve our neighbors

Treat our families

Handle responsibilities

Use our time

Manage resources

Make decisions

The Christian life is lived one choice at a time.

As believers follow Christ daily, their lives become a witness to God’s transforming grace.

Everyday Discipleship

The New Testament teaches that discipleship happens in ordinary moments.

A kind word.

A helping hand.

A forgiving heart.

A generous spirit.

A faithful prayer.

These everyday acts become opportunities to live out faith.

God uses ordinary people faithfully following Him in ordinary places to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
