It serves as an introduction to the Bible's story and the foundation of understanding God as Creator, Sustainer, and Lord of all things.

In the Beginning, God Created
God spoke, and creation came into being. The heavens, the earth, the seas, the plants, the animals, and humanity all reveal the power, wisdom, and goodness of the Creator.

1.1 Creation: In the Beginning

Learn the Story of the Old Testament – Season 1: Beginnings

Everything begins with God.

Before there was light, land, oceans, plants, animals, or people, God existed. The Bible opens with a powerful declaration:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 NASB)

Creation is more than the story of how the world began. It is the foundation of our understanding of God, humanity, and our purpose in life.

Genesis teaches us that God is the Creator, that creation is good, and that human beings were created in God’s image to know Him, love Him, and care for His world.

The Story

The opening chapters of Genesis describe God creating the world through His word.

God did not struggle or battle other forces. He simply spoke.

“Then God said…” appears repeatedly throughout the chapter.

Day 1

God created light and separated light from darkness.

Day 2

God created the sky and heavens.

Day 3

God gathered the waters, formed dry land, and created plants and trees.

Day 4

God created the sun, moon, and stars.

Day 5

God created birds and sea creatures.

Day 6

God created land animals and human beings.

Day 7

God rested, blessing the seventh day and setting it apart as holy.

After each act of creation, God declared it good.

After creating humanity, God declared His creation “very good.”

Understanding the Story

God Is the Creator

The Bible begins with God, not humanity.

God is eternal. He existed before creation and is the source of all life.

Creation reveals God’s power, wisdom, creativity, and authority.

Everything belongs to Him because everything comes from Him.

Creation Is Good

Genesis repeatedly emphasizes that God’s creation is good.

The world was not created as an accident or mistake.

Creation reflects God’s design and purpose.

Although sin later damages creation, God’s original design was good.

Humanity Is Created in God’s Image

One of the most important truths in Scripture is found in Genesis 1:26–27.

God created human beings in His image.

Being created in God’s image means people have value, dignity, purpose, and the ability to relate to God.

Every person matters because every person bears the image of the Creator.

Work Is Part of God’s Design

Before sin entered the world, Adam was given meaningful work.

God placed him in the garden to care for it.

Work was part of God’s good design, not a punishment.

Whether serving at church, caring for family, working a job, or helping a neighbor, meaningful work can honor God.

Rest Matters

God rested on the seventh day.

God did not rest because He was tired. He rested to establish a pattern for His people.

Rest reminds us that God is in control and that our worth comes from Him, not simply from our accomplishments.

Why This Story Matters

Genesis answers some of life’s biggest questions:

Where did we come from?

We were created by God.

Why are we here?

We were created to know God, worship Him, and reflect His character.

Do people have value?

Yes. Every person is created in God’s image.

Is creation important?

Yes. God entrusted humanity with caring for His creation.

Can we trust God?

Yes. The God who created the world is powerful, wise, and good.

Connecting to Jesus

The story of creation points forward to Jesus.

The Gospel of John begins with language that echoes Genesis:

“In the beginning was the Word…” (John 1:1 NASB)

John teaches that Jesus was present at creation.

Jesus is not only the Savior of the world; He is also the Creator.

Through Christ, God begins a new creation, restoring what sin later damages.

The Bible’s story begins in a garden and ends with God’s people dwelling with Him forever in a renewed creation.

Living the Message

Creation invites us to worship the Creator.

When we see a sunrise, a flower, a mountain, a child, or the stars in the night sky, we are reminded of God’s greatness.

Creation also reminds us that every person has value.

Because people are created in God’s image, we are called to treat others with dignity, compassion, and love.

This week:

Thank God for His creation.

Spend time outdoors noticing God’s handiwork.

Treat others as people created in God’s image.

Take time to rest and trust God.

Worship the Creator, not merely the gifts He has created.
