For generations, God’s people waited for the promised Savior.

The Old Testament ended with hope, expectation, and unanswered longing.

The prophets had spoken of a coming Messiah — a Savior sent by God who would bring redemption, peace, healing, justice, and restoration.

Yet after the prophet Malachi, the biblical record becomes quiet.

For hundreds of years, no new prophet appeared.

No new Scripture was written.

The people waited.

Empires rose and fell.

Nations changed.

The world around God’s people continued shifting and changing.

Yet God was still working.

Season 1: Waiting for the Savior explores the years between the Old and New Testaments and helps us understand the world Jesus entered when He was born.

This season introduces the silent years, Roman rule, Jewish worship and traditions, synagogues and Temple worship, biblical feasts and festivals, messianic hope, Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah, and the cultural and historical background of Jesus’ ministry.

Many people today are unfamiliar with the world Jesus lived in.

Understanding this background helps readers better understand Jesus’ teachings, His miracles, the reactions of religious leaders, the importance of the cross and resurrection, and how the Old Testament connects to the New Testament.

Understanding the Season

What Are the “Silent Years”?

The “silent years” refers to the time between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

During this period, no new biblical prophets appeared and no new books of Scripture were added to the Bible.

Yet history continued moving forward.

God’s people lived under Persian, Greek, and eventually Roman rule.

Though Scripture was silent, God was still preparing the world for the coming of Jesus.

What Does “Messiah” Mean?

The word Messiah means “Anointed One.”

God had promised to send a Savior and King who would rescue His people and establish God’s Kingdom.

In the New Testament, the Greek word Christ carries the same meaning.

Jesus Christ means:
Jesus the Messiah.

Why Does This Background Matter?
