Protection, Danger, and the Slaughter of the Innocents
Not everyone welcomed the birth of Jesus.
While shepherds worshiped and Wise Men traveled great distances seeking the Savior, King Herod responded with fear, jealousy, and violence.
Herod viewed the announcement of a newborn “King of the Jews” as a threat to his power.
After the Wise Men departed without returning to him, Herod became furious.
God warned Joseph in a dream to flee with Mary and Jesus to Egypt for safety.
What followed became one of the saddest moments connected to the birth story of Jesus:
the slaughter of innocent children in Bethlehem ordered by Herod.
This lesson reminds readers that the coming of Jesus brought both hope and opposition.

The Story
After the Wise Men left Bethlehem, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream.
The angel warned Joseph that Herod planned to search for the child in order to destroy Him.
Joseph immediately obeyed.
During the night, he took Mary and Jesus and fled to Egypt.
They remained there until Herod died.
Matthew explains that this fulfilled the words spoken through the prophet Hosea:
“Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
Meanwhile, Herod realized the Wise Men had not returned to him.
Filled with anger and fear, he ordered the killing of male children in Bethlehem who were two years old and younger.
This tragic event is often called:
The Slaughter of the Innocents.
Matthew connects this sorrowful moment to the prophet Jeremiah, who described deep mourning and grief among God’s people.
After Herod’s death, an angel again appeared to Joseph in a dream and instructed the family to return to Israel.
Joseph later settled his family in Nazareth in Galilee.

Why Did Joseph Flee to Egypt?
Joseph obeyed God’s warning in order to protect Jesus from Herod’s violence.
Egypt was outside Herod’s immediate rule and became a place of refuge and safety.
Who Was Herod?
Herod the Great ruled under Roman authority and was known for cruelty, political fear, and violent actions against perceived threats to his power.
The possibility of a newborn king terrified him.

Herod ordered the killing of young boys in Bethlehem in an attempt to destroy Jesus.

Israel once escaped to Egypt during famine in Joseph’s time.
Later, God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt during the Exodus.
Now Jesus also temporarily finds refuge there.

God repeatedly guided Joseph through dreams during the early years of Jesus’ life. These dreams provided warning, protection, and direction. Joseph’s willingness to obey quickly helped protect Mary and Jesus during dangerous circumstances.
Why the Story Is So Painful
The Slaughter of the Innocents reminds readers that evil, violence, and suffering exist in the world. The Bible does not ignore human grief and tragedy. Even the story surrounding Jesus’ birth includes fear, loss, and sorrow.
Jesus and Moses Connections
Many readers notice similarities between the stories of Moses and Jesus. Pharaoh ordered the killing of Hebrew boys during Moses’ infancy, while Herod ordered the killing of children in Bethlehem during Jesus’ infancy. Both stories involve God protecting a child who would later bring deliverance.
