7.11 — The Burial of Jesus

When Hope Seemed Lost

The cross was silent.

The crowds had dispersed.

The disciples were scattered.

The One who had healed the sick, raised the dead, calmed storms, and taught with authority now lay lifeless.

For the followers of Jesus, this was a moment of confusion and grief.

They knew the promises.

They had heard His predictions.

Yet they did not fully understand what was about to happen.

The burial of Jesus is often overlooked because it stands between the crucifixion and the resurrection.

Yet it is an important part of the Gospel story.

It confirms that Jesus truly died.

It fulfills prophecy.

It demonstrates courage from unexpected followers.

And it sets the stage for the greatest victory in history.

The Story

As evening approached on the day of the crucifixion, a wealthy man named Joseph of Arimathea came forward.

Joseph was a respected member of the Jewish council.

Unlike many of the leaders, he had become a follower of Jesus.

He courageously went to Pontius Pilate and requested permission to bury Jesus.

Pilate confirmed that Jesus was dead and granted the request.

Joseph was joined by Nicodemus, the Pharisee who had once come to Jesus at night.

Together they carefully prepared Jesus’ body for burial.

They wrapped Him in linen cloths along with a mixture of spices according to Jewish burial customs.

Nearby was a new tomb cut into rock.

The tomb belonged to Joseph.

Jesus was laid inside.

A large stone was rolled across the entrance.

Several women, including Mary Magdalene, watched carefully so they would know where Jesus had been placed.

The religious leaders remembered that Jesus had spoken about rising again.

Concerned that His disciples might steal the body, they requested a guard.

Roman soldiers were assigned to secure the tomb.

The stone was sealed.

The tomb was guarded.

From a human perspective, the story appeared finished.

But God was not finished.

Understanding the Story

Who Was Joseph of Arimathea?

Joseph was a wealthy and respected member of the council.

The Gospels describe him as a righteous man who was waiting for God’s Kingdom.

His willingness to identify with Jesus after the crucifixion required courage.

Who Was Nicodemus?

Nicodemus first appeared in John 3 when he visited Jesus at night.

Now he publicly assisted with Jesus’ burial.

His actions demonstrate growing faith and commitment.

Why Was a New Tomb Important?

The use of a new tomb ensured there would be no confusion about whose body was buried there.

It also fulfilled prophecy concerning the Messiah being buried with the rich.

Understanding Jesus

Why Is the Burial Important?

The burial confirms the reality of Jesus’ death.

Christian faith is not based on a near-death experience or symbolic story.

Jesus truly died and was truly buried.

Why Was the Tomb Sealed?

The authorities wanted to prevent any possibility of interference.

Ironically, the precautions taken to secure the tomb would later strengthen the testimony of the resurrection.

What Does This Reveal About Jesus?

Even in death, God’s plan remained active.

The burial was not a defeat.

It was a necessary step toward resurrection victory.

Understanding Jesus: Jewish Burial Customs

Jewish burials typically occurred quickly after death.

Bodies were wrapped in linen and placed in tombs, often carved into rock.

Spices were used to honor the deceased and help with burial preparations.

Family members and friends often visited tombs during periods of mourning.

Understanding these customs helps explain the actions of Joseph, Nicodemus, and the women who followed Jesus.

Old Testament Connections

Isaiah 53 foretold that the suffering servant would be assigned a grave with the wicked but be with a rich man in His death.

Joseph’s tomb fulfilled that prophecy.

Psalm 16 promised that God’s Holy One would not undergo decay.

The burial is therefore not the end of the story but part of God’s redemptive plan.

Missing Context Check

Did Everyone Lose Hope?

Many disciples were discouraged and confused.

They did not yet understand that resurrection morning was approaching.

Why Were Guards Posted?

The leaders feared that someone might remove the body and claim Jesus had risen.

The guards would later become important witnesses that the tomb had been secured.

Why Is the Burial Included in the Gospel?

Because it confirms the reality of Jesus’ death and prepares readers for the resurrection.

A Deeper Look: Saturday Silence

The day after the crucifixion is sometimes called Silent Saturday.

The disciples waited.

The women mourned.

The tomb remained closed.

Nothing appeared to be happening.

Yet God was still at work.

Many believers experience seasons that feel similar.

Prayers seem unanswered.

Hope appears distant.

The burial reminds us that God’s work often continues even when we cannot see it.

Sunday was coming.
