8.3 — The Road to Emmaus

When Jesus Walks Beside Us

Resurrection morning had brought astonishing news.

The tomb was empty.

The women reported seeing angels.

Mary Magdalene claimed she had seen the risen Lord.

Yet many followers of Jesus were still confused.

They did not understand what had happened.

Fear, disappointment, and unanswered questions filled their hearts.

Among them were two disciples traveling from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus.

As they walked, they discussed the events of the past few days.

They believed Jesus was the Messiah.

Now He had been crucified.

Their hopes seemed shattered.

What they did not realize was that Jesus Himself was about to join them on the journey.

The story of Emmaus reminds believers that Christ often walks beside His people even when they fail to recognize Him.

The Story

On the afternoon of resurrection day, two disciples traveled from Jerusalem to Emmaus.

As they talked about everything that had happened, a stranger joined them on the road.

It was Jesus.

Yet they did not recognize Him.

The stranger asked:

“What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?”

The disciples explained the recent events.

They spoke of Jesus’ miracles.

They spoke of His crucifixion.

They admitted their disappointment:

“We were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel.”

They also described the reports of the empty tomb.

Then Jesus began explaining the Scriptures.

Starting with Moses and continuing through the Prophets, He showed how the Old Testament pointed to the Messiah’s suffering and glory.

As they approached Emmaus, the disciples urged Him to stay.

That evening, Jesus sat with them for a meal.

When He took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, their eyes were opened.

They recognized Him.

Immediately Jesus disappeared from their sight.

The disciples exclaimed:

“Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road?”

Without delay, they returned to Jerusalem to tell the others that Jesus was alive.

Understanding the Story

Where Was Emmaus?

The exact location is uncertain, but Emmaus was a village a short distance from Jerusalem.

The journey provided time for conversation, reflection, and teaching.

Why Didn’t They Recognize Jesus?

Luke simply says their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.

The text emphasizes that recognition came in God’s timing.

The disciples first needed to understand the Scriptures.

Why Is the Breaking of Bread Important?

The action reminded them of Jesus.

The moment revealed His identity and connected their experience to what they had already learned from Him.

Understanding Jesus

Why Did Jesus Begin With Scripture?

Jesus wanted His followers to understand that His death and resurrection were part of God’s plan.

The resurrection was not an unexpected event.

It fulfilled promises made throughout the Old Testament.

What Does “Hearts Burning Within Us” Mean?

The disciples experienced spiritual awakening and understanding as Jesus explained God’s Word.

Truth was transforming their perspective.

Why Did Jesus Disappear?

The purpose of the encounter had been accomplished.

The disciples now understood both the Scriptures and the reality of the resurrection.

Understanding Jesus: Reading the Old Testament Through Christ

One of the most important lessons in this story is how Jesus interpreted Scripture.

He showed that the Law, the Prophets, and the writings all point toward Him.

The Bible is not a collection of disconnected stories.

It is one story of God’s plan of redemption centered on Jesus Christ.

This lesson becomes a foundation for understanding the entire Bible.

Old Testament Connections

Jesus explained how the Messiah had to suffer before entering glory.

Passages such as Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Genesis 3:15, Deuteronomy 18:15, and many others point toward Christ.

The Emmaus road becomes one of the greatest Bible studies ever given.

The risen Jesus reveals how God’s promises fit together.

Missing Context Check

Were These Two Disciples Part of the Twelve?

No.

They were followers of Jesus but not among the Twelve Apostles.

One is identified as Cleopas.

Why Is This Story Important?

It demonstrates both the reality of the resurrection and the importance of understanding Scripture.

What Can Modern Readers Learn?

Faith grows through God’s Word and through encounters with the living Christ.

A Deeper Look: Walking Through Disappointment

The disciples began the journey discouraged.

They believed God’s plan had failed.

By the end of the journey, they understood that God had been working all along.

Many believers experience similar moments.

Circumstances seem confusing.

Prayers seem unanswered.

Hope appears distant.

The Emmaus story reminds us that Jesus often walks beside us during those seasons, even when we fail to recognize His presence.
