The Morning That Changed Everything
The Sabbath had ended.
The long, painful days following the crucifixion were over.
Jesus had been buried.
A large stone sealed the tomb.
Roman guards stood watch.
The disciples were grieving.
Hope seemed lost.
Then came the morning of the first day of the week.
Several women who had faithfully followed Jesus made their way to the tomb carrying spices.
They expected to find a body.
They expected to continue the work of mourning.
They expected death.
Instead, they discovered the greatest news in human history.
The tomb was empty.
Jesus had risen.
The resurrection transformed fear into hope, sorrow into joy, and defeat into victory.
Everything was about to change.

The Story
Before dawn, Mary Magdalene and other women traveled to the tomb.
As they walked, they wondered who would move the heavy stone covering the entrance.
When they arrived, they discovered that the stone had already been rolled away.
The guards were gone.
The tomb stood open.
Entering the tomb area, they found that Jesus’ body was not there.
Instead, angels appeared and announced:
“Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen.”
The women were astonished.
Fear and joy filled their hearts.
They hurried to tell the disciples.
Peter and John ran to the tomb.
They found the burial cloths lying there, but Jesus was gone.
The evidence was undeniable.
The tomb was empty.
The resurrection had happened.
Understanding the Story
Who Came to the Tomb?
The Gospels mention several women, including Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome, and others.
These faithful followers became the first witnesses to the empty tomb.
Why Is the Stone Important?
The stone was large and heavy.
Humanly speaking, the women could not move it themselves.
The rolled-away stone was not intended to let Jesus out.
It was intended to let the witnesses see that the tomb was already empty.
Where Were the Disciples?
Most of the disciples were hiding in fear and confusion.
The women demonstrated remarkable faithfulness by going to the tomb despite the dangers and uncertainties.

Why Is the Empty Tomb Important?
The empty tomb is evidence that Jesus rose from the dead.
Christian faith is not based merely on teachings or memories.
It is based on a living Savior.
Did Jesus Simply Return to Life?
No.
Jesus was resurrected in victory.
Unlike Lazarus, who later died again, Jesus rose never to die again.
His resurrection inaugurated a new reality.

Throughout Scripture, angels often announce important acts of God.
Their message confirmed what had happened and directed attention to the risen Christ.

Did the Disciples Expect the Resurrection?
Not fully.
Although Jesus had predicted His resurrection, the disciples struggled to understand what He meant.

Why Didn’t Everyone Immediately Believe?
The resurrection was unexpected.
Many needed time and additional encounters with the risen Jesus before fully understanding.
Does the Empty Tomb Alone Prove the Resurrection?
