Trusting God When Life Seems Impossible
The disciples had just witnessed the Transfiguration.
They had seen Jesus revealed in glory.
They had heard the Father’s voice from heaven.
It was a mountaintop experience they would never forget.
But following Jesus does not happen only on mountaintops.
Soon after descending the mountain, Jesus and the disciples encountered a desperate situation.
A father brought his suffering son to the disciples.
The boy experienced violent seizures and severe physical distress.
The disciples had tried to help.
They could not.
The father turned to Jesus.
What followed became a powerful lesson about faith, prayer, dependence upon God, and trusting Him when circumstances seem impossible.
This lesson reminds believers that faith is not confidence in ourselves.

The Story
As Jesus, Peter, James, and John returned from the mountain, they found a large crowd gathered around the remaining disciples.
A father stepped forward and explained his situation.
His son suffered greatly.
The disciples had attempted to help but had been unable to do so.
The father pleaded with Jesus.
Jesus responded by calling the boy forward.
He rebuked the evil spirit that was afflicting him.
The boy was healed.
The crowd was amazed at God’s power.
Later, the disciples privately asked Jesus why they had been unable to help.
Jesus explained that the issue was not God’s power.
The issue involved faith and dependence upon God.
He taught them that certain spiritual challenges require prayer and complete trust in the Lord.
The lesson became one of the disciples’ most important opportunities for growth.

Why Couldn’t the Disciples Help?
The disciples had previously participated in ministry and had witnessed many miracles.
Yet this situation revealed that ministry is never about personal ability.
God’s work requires continual dependence upon Him.
