As Jesus’ ministry began to spread throughout Galilee, people quickly noticed something extraordinary.
Jesus did not simply teach.
He acted.
The sick were healed.
The broken were restored.
The impossible became possible.
Through miracles, Jesus revealed God’s power, compassion, and authority.
The miracles were never meant to be entertainment.
They were signs pointing people toward a greater truth:
Jesus is the promised Messiah.
His miracles revealed the arrival of God’s Kingdom and demonstrated that God was at work among His people.

The Story
One of Jesus’ first recorded miracles took place at a wedding in Cana of Galilee.
During the celebration, the family ran out of wine.
In that culture, this would have brought embarrassment and shame upon the hosts.
Mary informed Jesus about the problem.
Jesus instructed servants to fill large stone water jars with water.
When the water was drawn out, it had become wine.
The master of the feast was amazed.
This miracle revealed Jesus’ power while also showing His concern for people and their needs.
As Jesus continued ministering throughout Galilee, He healed the sick, cast out demons, and restored people who were suffering.
Crowds gathered because they witnessed God’s power at work.
Yet Jesus’ miracles always pointed beyond themselves.
They revealed who He was.
The miracles were signs of God’s Kingdom breaking into the world.

What Is a Miracle?
A miracle is an extraordinary act of God that demonstrates His power and purposes.
Miracles reveal God’s authority over creation, sickness, evil, and brokenness.
Why Did Jesus Perform Miracles?
Jesus performed miracles for several reasons.
He showed compassion toward people who were suffering.
He revealed His identity as the Messiah.
He demonstrated the power of God’s Kingdom.

Why Start at a Wedding?
Jesus’ first recorded miracle took place during an ordinary family celebration.

Did Everyone Believe Because of the Miracles?
No.
Some people responded with faith.

People still had to decide how they would respond to Jesus.
Understanding Jesus
Weddings in the Time of Jesus
Jewish weddings were major community celebrations that often lasted several days. Hospitality was extremely important. Running out of food or drink could bring embarrassment upon the family. Jesus’ miracle at Cana helped preserve joy and honor for the hosts.
Why Did Jesus Use Water Jars?
The stone jars were used for Jewish purification practices. By using these jars, Jesus connected His ministry to themes of cleansing, renewal, and transformation.
Healing in the Ancient World
Medical knowledge was limited compared to modern times. Many illnesses could not be treated effectively. People often lived with long-term sickness, disability, or suffering. Jesus’ healings brought hope to people who had few other options.
Demons and Spiritual Warfare
The Gospels describe Jesus confronting evil spiritual forces. These encounters demonstrated His authority over evil and His power to bring freedom and restoration.
Old Testament Connections
The miracles of Jesus connect directly to Old Testament promises about the coming Messiah.
Isaiah foretold a time when:
“The eyes of the blind will be opened,
And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.”
The prophets described a future age of healing, restoration, and renewal.

Did Other People in the Bible Perform Miracles?
Yes.
Throughout the Old Testament, God worked through people such as Moses, Elijah, and Elisha to perform miracles. The apostles would also perform miracles in the Book of Acts. However, Jesus’ miracles were unique because they revealed His identity as the promised Messiah and demonstrated the arrival of God’s Kingdom. Jesus did not perform miracles simply to impress people. His miracles pointed people toward faith, salvation, and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
A Deeper Look: The Four Messianic Miracles
Some Jewish teachers believed certain miracles could only be performed by the Messiah.
While scholars debate the exact details, many Christians point to four special miracles that demonstrated Jesus’ unique authority:
Healing a Jewish leper.
Healing a man born blind.
Casting out a mute demon.
Raising the dead after an extended period.
These miracles challenged religious leaders and strengthened the evidence that Jesus was the promised Messiah.
Healing the Leper
One of the miracles many Jewish teachers associated with the coming Messiah involved healing a Jewish leper. Leprosy was one of the most feared diseases in the ancient world. People diagnosed with leprosy were often separated from family, worship, community life, and normal social relationships. When Jesus healed lepers, He restored not only their health but also their ability to return to family, worship, and community life.

Faith Matters
The Healing of A Leper: Why the Priests Were Required to Investigate
Leviticus 13–14 contains detailed instructions for priests to examine people with suspected leprosy and determine whether they were clean or unclean. The priests were also given instructions for what to do if a person was healed.
One important detail is that Leviticus 14 provides a ceremony for the cleansing of a healed leper. The ceremony involved sacrifices, offerings, and an official declaration that the person could return to worship and community life.
According to many Bible teachers, Jewish priests rarely, if ever, had reason to perform the full cleansing ceremony because cases of true leprosy were generally considered incurable. The Law provided instructions, but there are very few biblical examples of priests carrying out the complete process for a healed Jewish leper.
When Jesus healed lepers, He often instructed them:
“Go, show yourself to the priest…”
(Matthew 8:4; Mark 1:44; Luke 5:14)
By doing this, Jesus required the priests to investigate what had happened.
The priests would have needed to examine the healed person and consult the instructions found in Leviticus 14.
For some teachers, this is one reason the healing of a Jewish leper became so significant. The religious leaders were confronted with evidence that something extraordinary was taking place. Jesus was not merely healing disease; He was forcing attention back to the Scriptures and the promises concerning the Messiah.
Old Testament Connection
Leviticus 14 — The Cleansing of a Healed Leper
The ceremony included:
- examination by a priest
- sacrifices and offerings
- ceremonial cleansing
- restoration to community life
- restoration to worship
The process symbolized more than physical healing. It represented restoration, reconciliation, and new life.
Christians often see this as a picture of what Jesus does spiritually:
He restores people who have been separated from God and brings them back into fellowship and community.
Why This Lesson Matters
People still experience sickness, grief, brokenness, disappointment, and suffering.
The miracles of Jesus remind believers that God cares deeply about human needs.
The miracles also reveal that Jesus is more than a teacher.
Christians believe He is the Messiah, the Son of God, and the Savior of the world.
