3.2 — The Baptism of Jesus

The Baptism of Jesus: The Father speaks, the Spirit descends, and Jesus begins His public ministry.
3.2 — The Baptism of Jesus
The Beginning of Jesus’ Public Ministry
After years of quiet preparation in Nazareth and after John the Baptist had been calling people to repentance, Jesus stepped forward to begin His public ministry.
One day, Jesus traveled to the Jordan River where John was baptizing people.
What happened there became one of the most important moments in the Gospels.
Jesus was baptized.
The heavens opened.
The Holy Spirit descended.
The voice of God the Father spoke.
For one of the clearest moments in Scripture, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were all revealed together.
The baptism of Jesus marked the beginning of His public ministry and revealed His identity as the beloved Son of God.

The Story
Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee to the Jordan River where John was baptizing.
When Jesus approached him, John was surprised.
John understood that Jesus was greater than he was.
John even tried to prevent the baptism, saying that he needed to be baptized by Jesus instead.
But Jesus answered:
“Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”
John then baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.
As Jesus came up from the water, something extraordinary happened.
The heavens opened.
The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove.
Then a voice from heaven declared:
“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
The Father publicly affirmed Jesus.
The Holy Spirit empowered Jesus.
The ministry of Jesus was beginning.

Understanding Jesus
Baptism in the Time of John
John’s baptism symbolized repentance, cleansing, and preparation for God’s coming Kingdom. People entered the water as a public expression of their desire to turn back to God and begin a new chapter of faithfulness.
The Jordan River
The Jordan River held deep meaning for God’s people. Israel crossed the Jordan when entering the Promised Land after the wilderness journey. By beginning His ministry there, Jesus connected His mission to God’s ongoing story of redemption and restoration.
The Trinity Revealed
Christians use the word Trinity to describe one God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While the word Trinity does not appear in the Bible, this event provides one of the clearest pictures of all three Persons working together. The Father speaks, the Son is baptized, and the Holy Spirit descends.

Why Baptism Matters Today
Christians practice baptism because Jesus identified with it and later commanded His followers to baptize new believers. Different Christian traditions practice baptism in different ways, but baptism commonly symbolizes God’s grace, new life, belonging to Christ, and becoming part of the community of faith. Jesus’ baptism helps believers understand the importance of obedience, identity, and publicly following God.
