Purim
For Such a Time as This
Purim is a joyful Jewish festival that celebrates God’s deliverance of the Jewish people through the courage of Queen Esther and the faithfulness of Mordecai. Although Purim is not one of the feasts commanded in the Law of Moses, it became an important annual celebration and was widely observed during the time of Jesus.
The story of Purim is found in the Book of Esther and takes place during the Persian Empire after many Jews had returned from exile. It is a story of courage, providence, faith, and God’s protection of His people.
One of the most remarkable features of Esther is that God’s name is never directly mentioned in the book. Yet His guidance can be seen throughout the story as He works behind the scenes to accomplish His purposes.
The Story of Esther
Esther was a young Jewish woman living in Persia who became queen.
Her cousin Mordecai served as her guardian and advisor.
A powerful official named Haman developed hatred toward Mordecai and plotted to destroy the Jewish people throughout the empire.
When Esther learned of the plan, she risked her life by approaching the king without being summoned.
Through courage, wisdom, and God’s providence, the plot was exposed.
The Jewish people were delivered, and Haman’s plans were defeated.
The story became one of the great accounts of God’s protection and faithfulness.
Why Purim Was Established
Following their deliverance, the Jewish people established an annual celebration to remember what God had done.
The name Purim comes from the word “pur,” referring to the lots that Haman cast while planning the destruction of the Jews.
What was intended for destruction became a story of rescue and victory.
Purim became a celebration of God’s providence and protection.
How Purim Was Celebrated
By the time of Jesus, Purim was widely observed throughout the Jewish world.
Families gathered to hear the story of Esther.
People celebrated with feasting and joy.

Purim in the Time of Jesus
Although Purim is not directly mentioned in the Gospels, it was observed throughout the Jewish communities of Israel and the Roman Empire during Jesus’ lifetime.
The themes of God’s faithfulness, courage, deliverance, and protection would have been familiar to the people who heard Jesus teach.
The story of Esther helped shape Jewish hopes and reminded people that God remains at work even when His presence is not immediately visible.

How Purim Points to Jesus
Purim is not directly prophetic in the way Passover points to Christ, yet it reflects several themes fulfilled in Jesus.

These themes ultimately find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who brings salvation and victory over sin and death.
