2.5 Joseph: God Meant It for Good
Joseph’s story is one of the most remarkable accounts in the Old Testament.
It is a story of dreams, betrayal, hardship, faithfulness, forgiveness, and God’s providence.
Joseph experienced events that could have caused him to lose hope. He was rejected by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, imprisoned, and forgotten. Yet throughout every season, God remained with him.
Years later, Joseph would look back on his life and recognize a powerful truth:
“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” (Genesis 50:20 NASB)
Joseph’s story reminds us that God is at work even when we cannot see the whole picture.

The Story
Joseph was one of the twelve sons of Jacob.
Jacob loved Joseph deeply and gave him a special robe, often called a coat of many colors.
Joseph also received dreams suggesting that one day he would hold a position of leadership.
His brothers became jealous.
Instead of supporting Joseph, they plotted against him.
They threw him into a pit and eventually sold him to traders traveling to Egypt.
The brothers then convinced their father that Joseph had died.
In Egypt, Joseph became a servant in the house of Potiphar.
God blessed Joseph, and he prospered.
However, Joseph was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and thrown into prison.
Even there, God remained with him.
Joseph faithfully served while imprisoned and gained favor with those around him.
Years later, Pharaoh experienced troubling dreams that no one could interpret.
Joseph was brought before Pharaoh.
With God’s help, Joseph explained that seven years of abundance would be followed by seven years of severe famine.
Pharaoh placed Joseph in charge of preparing Egypt.
When famine spread throughout the region, people traveled to Egypt for food.
Among them were Joseph’s brothers.
The brothers who had betrayed him now stood before him seeking help.
Eventually Joseph revealed his identity.
Rather than seeking revenge, he forgave them.
God had used Joseph’s suffering to preserve many lives and protect the family through which His covenant promises would continue.
Understanding the Story
God Is Present in Every Season
Joseph experienced success and hardship.
He lived in a palace and a prison.
Yet one truth remained constant:
God was with him.
Our circumstances may change, but God’s presence does not.
God Can Use Difficult Experiences
Joseph’s life did not unfold as he expected.
Many events seemed unfair.
Yet God worked through every circumstance.
What appeared to be setbacks became part of God’s greater plan.
Faithfulness Matters
Joseph remained faithful whether he was serving in a household, sitting in prison, or leading a nation.
Faithfulness is not determined by circumstances.
It is determined by trust in God.
Forgiveness Brings Freedom
Joseph had every reason to hold bitterness toward his brothers.
Instead, he chose forgiveness.
Forgiveness did not erase what happened.
It allowed healing and restoration to begin.
Why This Story Matters
Joseph’s story helps answer important questions.
Is God still working during difficult times?
Yes. God often works behind the scenes in ways we cannot immediately see.
Can God use suffering for good?
Yes. While God does not cause evil, He can bring good from difficult situations.
Why should we remain faithful?
Because God remains faithful to us.
Is forgiveness possible after deep hurt?
Yes. With God’s help, forgiveness can bring healing and restoration.
Connecting to Jesus
Joseph’s story contains several parallels to Jesus.
Joseph was rejected by his brothers.
Jesus was rejected by many of His own people.
Joseph suffered despite his innocence.
Jesus suffered despite being without sin.
Joseph’s suffering ultimately saved lives.
Jesus’ death and resurrection provide salvation for the world.
Joseph forgave those who wronged him.
Jesus prayed:
“Father, forgive them…” (Luke 23:34 NASB)
Joseph points forward to the greater Savior who would come through the family line of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Living the Message
Joseph teaches us to trust God even when life is difficult.
This week:
Trust God in situations you do not fully understand.
Remain faithful in small responsibilities.
Look for ways God may be working behind the scenes.
Pray for the ability to forgive those who have hurt you.
Remember that God sees the whole story, even when you can only see one chapter.

He trusted God and continued serving faithfully wherever he was.

Jacob — God transforms imperfect people.
Joseph — God works through every circumstance for His purposes.
Together these stories reveal that God’s promises are trustworthy and His faithfulness endures from generation to generation.
