Elijah and the Prophets of Baal: The Lord Alone Is God
On Mount Carmel, Elijah challenged the people to choose whom they would serve. When God answered Elijah’s prayer with fire from heaven, the people witnessed the power and faithfulness of the one true God.
7.1 Elijah and the Prophets of Baal
During one of the darkest spiritual seasons in Israel’s history, many people had turned away from God.
King Ahab and Queen Jezebel promoted the worship of Baal, a false god associated with storms, rain, and fertility.
Altars to Baal spread throughout the land.
God’s prophets were persecuted.
Many people tried to serve both the Lord and false gods at the same time.
Into this moment stepped the prophet Elijah.
Elijah boldly challenged the nation to choose whom they would serve.
The dramatic confrontation on Mount Carmel became one of the most powerful demonstrations in Scripture that the Lord alone is God.
The story reminds us that faithfulness often requires courage and that God calls His people to wholehearted devotion.

The Story
For several years, a severe drought covered the land of Israel.
Elijah had warned King Ahab that the drought was a judgment against the nation’s idolatry.
Eventually God instructed Elijah to confront Ahab and the prophets of Baal.
A gathering was called on Mount Carmel.
Hundreds of prophets of Baal assembled along with the people of Israel.
Elijah stood before the crowd and asked:
“How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” (1 Kings 18:21 NASB)
Elijah proposed a challenge.
Two altars would be prepared.
One for Baal.
One for the Lord.
The prophets would pray, and the god who answered with fire would be recognized as the true God.
The prophets of Baal prayed for hours.
They shouted, danced, and called upon Baal.
Nothing happened.
No fire came.
Then Elijah rebuilt the altar of the Lord.
He placed the sacrifice on the altar and even drenched it with water.
Elijah prayed simply and confidently.
Immediately, fire from the Lord fell from heaven.
The fire consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the water surrounding the altar.
When the people saw it, they fell on their faces and declared:
“The Lord, He is God!” (1 Kings 18:39 NASB)
Soon afterward, rain returned to the land, ending the drought.
Understanding the Story
God Calls for Wholehearted Faith
Elijah challenged the people to stop wavering between two loyalties.
God desires wholehearted devotion, not divided hearts.
Faithfulness means placing God above everything else.
God Alone Is Worthy of Worship
The confrontation revealed the emptiness of false gods.
Baal could not answer.
The Lord demonstrated His power and authority.
The story reminds us that only God deserves worship and trust.
Courage Matters
Elijah stood almost completely alone.
Yet he trusted God enough to speak truth boldly.
Faithfulness often requires courage, especially when culture moves away from God’s ways.
Prayer Is Powerful

God responded powerfully.
