8.4 Nehemiah Rebuilds the Walls
The Temple had been rebuilt, but Jerusalem still remained vulnerable.
Its walls were broken down.
Its gates had been destroyed.
The city lacked security, stability, and protection.
When Nehemiah heard about Jerusalem’s condition, he was heartbroken.
Though serving far away in the Persian king’s court, Nehemiah deeply cared about God’s people and God’s city.
Instead of giving in to despair, Nehemiah responded with prayer, courage, planning, and action.
God used Nehemiah to lead one of the most remarkable rebuilding efforts in Scripture.
The story reminds believers that prayer and faithful action work together and that God can use ordinary people to restore what has been broken.

The Story
Nehemiah served as cupbearer to the king of Persia.
One day he received troubling news from Jerusalem:
“The wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire.” (Nehemiah 1:3 NASB)
Nehemiah wept, prayed, fasted, and confessed the sins of the people before God.
After seeking God’s guidance, Nehemiah courageously approached the king and requested permission to travel to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls.
God moved in the king’s heart, and Nehemiah received approval, supplies, and protection for the journey.
When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, he carefully inspected the damaged walls at night.
Then he gathered the people and encouraged them:
“Come, let’s rebuild the wall of Jerusalem.” (Nehemiah 2:17 NASB)
Families, workers, priests, and leaders all joined together in the rebuilding effort.
But opposition quickly arose.
Enemies mocked, threatened, and attempted to stop the work.
Some tried to discourage the builders through fear.
Others spread lies about Nehemiah.
Still, the people continued.
The Bible says:
“The people had a mind to work.” (Nehemiah 4:6 NASB)
The workers rebuilt while remaining alert and prepared to defend themselves if necessary.
Despite the challenges, the walls were completed in just fifty-two days.
The surrounding nations recognized that God had helped His people accomplish the work.
