Esther: Courage for Such a Time as This
God placed Esther in the Persian palace at exactly the right moment. Through courage, prayer, and faithful action, she helped save her people during a dangerous and uncertain time.
8.1 Esther: Courage for Such a Time as This
Not all of God’s people returned immediately to Jerusalem after the exile.
Many remained scattered throughout the Persian Empire.
Far from home and living in a foreign culture, the Jewish people often faced uncertainty and danger.
During this time, God worked through a young Jewish woman named Esther.
Esther became queen of Persia through circumstances that seemed unlikely and unexpected.
When a wicked official named Haman plotted to destroy the Jewish people, Esther faced a difficult choice.
Speaking to the king without permission could cost her life.
Remaining silent could mean disaster for her people.
Through courage, wisdom, prayer, and faith, Esther stepped forward at exactly the right moment.
Her story reminds believers that God often works through ordinary people placed in extraordinary situations and that faithful courage can make a lasting difference.

The Story
During the reign of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I), a Jewish girl named Esther lived in Persia with her cousin Mordecai.
After Queen Vashti was removed from her position, Esther was chosen to become the new queen.
At first, Esther kept her Jewish identity private as Mordecai advised.
Meanwhile, an important official named Haman became furious because Mordecai refused to bow before him.
In his anger, Haman convinced the king to issue a decree ordering the destruction of the Jewish people throughout the empire.
When Mordecai learned of the plan, he urged Esther to intervene.
Esther hesitated because approaching the king without being summoned could result in death.
Mordecai responded with one of the most famous statements in Scripture:
“And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 NASB)
Esther asked the Jewish people to fast and pray for three days.
Then she courageously approached the king.
The king welcomed her.
Through wisdom and careful timing, Esther revealed Haman’s plot.
The king became angry and ordered Haman’s punishment.
The Jewish people were protected, and a great tragedy was prevented.
The events later became the foundation for the Jewish celebration of Purim, remembering God’s deliverance and faithfulness.
Understanding the Story
God Works Behind the Scenes
Interestingly, the Book of Esther never directly mentions God’s name.
Yet God’s guidance is visible throughout the story.
What appeared to be coincidence became part of God’s providential plan.
God often works quietly through circumstances, timing, and faithful people.
Courage Requires Risk
Esther could have remained silent.
Instead, she chose courage despite the personal cost.
Faithfulness sometimes requires stepping forward in difficult moments.

Before taking action, Esther called for prayer and fasting.

Esther was not a prophet or military leader.
She was an ordinary young woman placed in an extraordinary position.
