6.4 Solomon’s Wisdom

When Solomon became king after his father David, he faced an enormous responsibility.

Leading God’s people required wisdom, discernment, and humility.

God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered him an extraordinary opportunity:

He could ask for anything.

Instead of requesting wealth, power, or long life, Solomon asked for wisdom.

His request pleased God.

God granted Solomon wisdom beyond any king before him and added blessings he had not requested.

Solomon’s story reminds us that true wisdom begins with God and that wise choices are rooted in humility, discernment, and a desire to honor Him.

The Story

After David’s death, Solomon became king of Israel.

One night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said:

“Ask what you wish Me to give you.” (1 Kings 3:5 NASB)

Solomon recognized the weight of his responsibilities.

Instead of asking for riches or military success, he prayed:

“Give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people.” (1 Kings 3:9 NASB)

God was pleased with Solomon’s request.

Because Solomon had asked for wisdom rather than personal gain, God promised to give him wisdom along with wealth, honor, and influence.

Soon an opportunity arose to demonstrate that wisdom.

Two women came before Solomon, each claiming to be the mother of the same child.

There seemed to be no clear evidence.

Solomon proposed a shocking solution.

He ordered that the child be divided.

The true mother immediately offered to give up her claim so the child could live.

The other woman agreed to divide the child.

Solomon recognized the genuine mother’s love and returned the child to her.

The people were amazed.

They saw that God had given Solomon extraordinary wisdom.

As Solomon’s reputation spread, leaders from distant nations traveled to hear his teachings and observe his wisdom.
