David and Goliath: Faith Greater Than Fear
While others saw an unbeatable giant, David saw an opportunity for God to demonstrate His power. Trusting in the Lord rather than weapons or armor, David faced Goliath with faith and courage.
6.2 David and Goliath
David and Goliath is one of the most famous stories in the Bible.
It is often remembered as the story of a small shepherd defeating a giant warrior.
But the story is about much more than courage.
It is about faith.
While others focused on the size of the problem, David focused on the greatness of God.
The battle between David and Goliath reminds us that faith sees obstacles differently. God’s people are called to trust Him, even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
David’s victory became one of the defining moments of Israel’s history and introduced the shepherd who would one day become king.

The Story
The Philistine army gathered for battle against Israel.
Among the Philistines was a giant warrior named Goliath.
Day after day, Goliath challenged the Israelites.
He mocked God’s people and demanded that someone fight him.
The Israelites were terrified.
Even King Saul was afraid.
Meanwhile, David was not a soldier.
He was a young shepherd who cared for his father’s sheep.
One day David arrived at the battlefield to deliver food to his brothers.
When he heard Goliath’s challenge, he was surprised that no one was willing to respond.
David asked:
“Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26 NASB)
David volunteered to fight.
Saul doubted him.
Goliath laughed when he saw him.
David refused Saul’s armor and instead carried only a staff, a sling, and five smooth stones.
As he approached Goliath, David declared:
“The battle is the Lord’s.” (1 Samuel 17:47 NASB)
David placed a stone in his sling and launched it.
The stone struck Goliath in the forehead.
The giant fell.
Israel won the battle.
God had given victory through an unlikely shepherd.
Understanding the Story
Faith Focuses on God
Most people saw a giant.
David saw an opportunity for God to demonstrate His power.
Faith does not deny challenges.
Faith remembers that God is greater than those challenges.
God Uses Unexpected People
David was young.
He was not a trained soldier.
Others overlooked him.
Yet God often works through people the world considers unlikely.
God sees potential where others see limitations.
Preparation Matters
David’s confidence did not come from nowhere.
As a shepherd, he had learned to trust God while protecting his flock.
Faithfulness in small responsibilities prepared him for larger opportunities.
Victory Belongs to God
David did not claim credit for himself.
He recognized that God was the source of victory.
The story reminds us that God’s power accomplishes what human strength cannot.

Jesus accomplished an even greater victory through His death and resurrection.
David’s triumph points forward to the greater King who would come from his family line.
Living the Message
David’s story encourages us to trust God when facing challenges.

Identify a “giant” you are facing.
Remember ways God has helped you in the past.
Focus on God’s faithfulness rather than your fears.
Take a step of faith instead of allowing fear to control your decisions.
Give God the credit for victories and blessings in your life.
