Ruth: A Story of Redemption
Ruth’s faithfulness to Naomi and her trust in God led her on an unexpected journey from loss to hope. Through God’s provision and the kindness of Boaz, Ruth became part of a story of redemption that ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ.
5.4 Ruth: A Story of Redemption
Ruth’s story begins with loss and uncertainty.
A famine forced Naomi and her family to leave Bethlehem and move to Moab. There, tragedy struck. Naomi’s husband died, and later her two sons died as well.
Naomi was left grieving and without support.
One of her daughters-in-law, Ruth, faced a choice.
She could remain in her homeland and begin a new life, or she could stay with Naomi and trust an uncertain future.
Ruth chose faithfulness.
Her decision led to a remarkable story of loyalty, provision, redemption, and God’s providence.
Although Ruth was a foreigner, God welcomed her into His people and used her in His plan of salvation.
Her story reminds us that God often works through ordinary acts of faithfulness and that His grace extends to all people.

The Story
During a time of famine, Naomi, her husband Elimelech, and their two sons left Bethlehem and settled in Moab.
Over time, Naomi’s husband died.
Her sons married Moabite women named Ruth and Orpah.
Then tragedy struck again.
Both sons died.
Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem.
She encouraged Ruth and Orpah to remain in Moab with their families.
Orpah stayed behind.
Ruth chose a different path.
She told Naomi:
“Where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.” (Ruth 1:16 NASB)
Together they returned to Bethlehem.
To provide for herself and Naomi, Ruth gathered leftover grain in the fields.
She happened to work in the field of a man named Boaz.
Boaz was kind, generous, and faithful to God.
He protected Ruth and ensured she had enough food.
As the story unfolded, Boaz became a kinsman-redeemer—a relative who could help provide for Naomi’s family.
Eventually Boaz married Ruth.
God blessed their family with a son named Obed.
Obed became the grandfather of King David.
Through Ruth’s family line, God’s plan of redemption continued.
Understanding the Story
Faithfulness Matters
Ruth’s decision to remain with Naomi changed the course of her life.
Her faithfulness reflected loyalty, love, and trust.
Small acts of faithfulness often become part of God’s larger plan.
God Welcomes All People
Ruth was not an Israelite.
She came from Moab.
Yet God welcomed her into His covenant people.
The story reminds us that God’s grace extends beyond national, cultural, and social boundaries.
God Works Through Ordinary Circumstances
There are no dramatic miracles recorded in Ruth.
Instead, God works through everyday events, relationships, and decisions.
Often God’s providence is seen in ordinary faithfulness.
Redemption Is Central
Boaz served as a redeemer for Ruth and Naomi.
His actions provided protection, restoration, and hope.
The theme of redemption runs throughout the entire Bible.

Boaz provided security and restoration.
Jesus provides salvation and eternal life.
Ruth became part of the family line of King David.
Generations later, Jesus would be born from that same family line.
God used Ruth’s faithfulness to help prepare the way for the coming Savior.

Ruth’s story encourages us to remain faithful in everyday life.
