The Story

After Joshua’s generation passed away, Israel entered a difficult period known as the time of the Judges.

Again and again, the people drifted away from God.

When they turned from Him, they experienced oppression from neighboring nations.

When they cried out for help, God raised up leaders called judges to rescue them.

One of those leaders was Deborah.

Deborah served as both a prophet and a judge.

She would sit beneath a palm tree, and the people of Israel came to her for wisdom and guidance.

At that time, Israel was suffering under the rule of Jabin, king of Canaan.

His military commander, Sisera, possessed a powerful army with hundreds of iron chariots.

God instructed Deborah to call a military leader named Barak and tell him to gather an army.

Barak hesitated.

He told Deborah:

“If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” (Judges 4:8 NASB)

Deborah agreed to accompany him.

Trusting God’s promise, they led Israel into battle.

God intervened, and Sisera’s army was defeated.

The victory demonstrated that Israel’s strength came not from military power but from God’s faithfulness.

Afterward, Deborah and Barak sang a song of praise celebrating God’s deliverance.
