Hades, Paradise, and the Hope of Resurrection

Death Is Not the End
Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, believers have the hope of eternal life, the promise of resurrection, and the assurance that one day God will make all things new.
Hades, Paradise, and the Hope of Resurrection
Understanding What Happens After Death
Death has always raised questions. Where do people go when they die? What did faithful believers experience before Jesus’ resurrection? What happens to believers now?
The Bible teaches that death is not the end. Through Jesus Christ, God has provided hope beyond the grave and the promise of eternal life.
This page explores what Scripture teaches about Hades, Paradise, Abraham’s Bosom, heaven, and the believer’s hope in Christ.
What Is Hades?
Hades is the Greek word often translated as “the realm of the dead” or “the unseen world.”
In the New Testament, Hades is not the final destination of either believers or unbelievers. Instead, it is described as a temporary place associated with death while awaiting God’s final judgment.
The Old Testament often uses the Hebrew word Sheol in a similar way.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
Jesus provided one of the clearest pictures of the afterlife in Luke 16:19–31.
In this account:
- Lazarus dies and is carried to Abraham’s side.
- The rich man dies and experiences torment.
- A great gulf separates the two places.
- Neither side can cross to the other.
This passage reveals two very different conditions after death.
Abraham’s Bosom
Abraham’s Bosom refers to a place of comfort and rest for the faithful.
The image reflects closeness, fellowship, and security with Abraham, the father of faith.
Many Bible teachers understand Abraham’s Bosom to be the blessed part of Hades where faithful believers awaited the completion of God’s plan through Christ.
It was not a place of suffering.
It was a place of comfort, peace, and hope.
What Was Paradise?
Paradise is a biblical term describing a place of blessing and fellowship with God.
When Jesus spoke to the thief on the cross, He said:
“Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
— Luke 23:43 (NASB)
Many Christians believe Paradise referred to the place of comfort where the faithful awaited the completion of Christ’s redemptive work.
What Changed Because of Jesus?
The death and resurrection of Jesus changed everything.
Through His sacrifice:
- Sin was defeated.
- Death was conquered.
- The way into God’s presence was opened.
- Believers received the promise of eternal life.
Jesus declared:
“I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies.”
— John 11:25 (NASB)
Because Christ conquered death, believers now have direct access to God’s presence.
Where Do Believers Go Today?
Many Christians understand the New Testament to teach that believers now go directly into the presence of Christ when they die.
Paul wrote:
“To be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:8 (NASB)
He also wrote:
“Having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better.”
— Philippians 1:23 (NASB)
Because of Jesus’ resurrection, believers do not fear death. Their spirits are immediately with Christ while awaiting the future resurrection of the body.
The Future Resurrection
The Christian hope is not merely life after death.
The ultimate hope is resurrection.
Just as Jesus rose bodily from the grave, believers will one day receive resurrected bodies.
At Christ’s return:
- The dead in Christ will be raised.
- Believers will receive glorified bodies.
- God will create a new heaven and a new earth.
- Death will be defeated forever.

Why This Matters
The Bible does not call believers to fear death.
Because of Jesus:
- Death is not the end.
- The grave does not have the final word.
- Eternal life is available through faith in Christ.
- Believers have the assurance of being with the Lord.
The resurrection of Jesus gives hope for every believer and confidence that one day death itself will be swallowed up in victory.
