The Holiness of God

Discovering the Perfect Purity and Majesty of God

One of the most important truths about God is that He is holy.

Throughout the Bible, God’s holiness sets Him apart from everything He has created. He is completely pure, perfectly righteous, and entirely without sin. His holiness is not simply one of His many attributes—it is central to His very nature.

God’s holiness fills heaven with worship, reveals the seriousness of sin, demonstrates His perfect justice, and magnifies the wonder of His grace.

As we come to understand God’s holiness, we also gain a deeper appreciation for His mercy, His love, and the salvation He offers through Jesus Christ.

God is perfectly holy—completely pure, righteous, and worthy of all worship. His holiness reveals both His majesty and His amazing grace through Jesus Christ.

What Does It Mean That God Is Holy?

The word holy means “set apart.”

God is unlike anyone or anything else.

He is:

Perfectly pure

Completely righteous

Absolutely truthful

Entirely without sin

Infinite in majesty

Worthy of all worship

Nothing compares to God’s holiness.

He is perfect in every thought, every word, every action, and every purpose.

God’s Holiness Throughout Scripture

From Genesis to Revelation, God’s holiness is continually revealed.

Moses removed his sandals before the burning bush because the ground was made holy by God’s presence.

The prophet Isaiah saw the Lord seated on His throne while the heavenly beings proclaimed,

“Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts.”

The Book of Revelation echoes that same worship around God’s heavenly throne.

Throughout Scripture, God’s holiness inspires reverence, worship, humility, and awe.

God’s Holiness Reveals the Seriousness of Sin

God’s holiness helps us understand why sin matters.

Sin is not simply breaking a rule.

Sin separates people from a perfectly holy God.

Because God is holy:

He cannot ignore sin.

He cannot approve evil.

He always acts with perfect justice.

Yet God’s holiness is never separated from His mercy.

Instead of abandoning humanity, God provided salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Cross Reveals God’s Holiness and Love

The cross is where God’s holiness and God’s love meet.

God did not overlook sin.

Jesus willingly bore its penalty.

At the cross, God’s justice was satisfied, His holiness upheld, and His love demonstrated.

Through faith in Jesus Christ, sinners are forgiven, cleansed, and welcomed into God’s family.

The holiness that once revealed our separation from God now points us toward His amazing grace.

Called to Be Holy

God not only reveals His holiness—He also calls His people to reflect it.

Holiness does not mean becoming perfect through our own efforts.

It means living a life that is devoted to God and increasingly shaped by His character.

As believers grow in Christ, the Holy Spirit transforms them to become more like Jesus.

Christian holiness includes:

Loving God wholeheartedly

Rejecting sinful attitudes and behaviors

Growing in obedience

Practicing forgiveness

Speaking truthfully

Living with integrity

Showing compassion

Seeking justice

Walking humbly with God

Holiness is not merely avoiding sin.

It is learning to love what God loves.

Reverence and Worship

Understanding God’s holiness changes how we worship.

We approach God with:

Awe

Gratitude

Humility

Joy

Confidence through Christ

Because Jesus has made a way for us to come before God, believers can worship with both reverence and assurance.

We worship a God who is infinitely holy and yet wonderfully gracious.
