Understanding Satan’s Rebellion Against God
The Bible teaches that evil did not begin on earth. Before humanity’s fall into sin, a rebellion took place in the spiritual realm. Satan, originally created as a powerful and beautiful angel, chose pride over obedience and sought to exalt himself above God. His rebellion resulted in his fall and the fall of other angels who followed him.

Who Is Satan?
The name Satan means “adversary” or “accuser.”

The Bible presents Satan as a real spiritual being who actively opposes God and seeks to draw people away from Him.

Satan’s Original Position
The Bible suggests that Satan was originally created as a glorious angelic being.
Ezekiel 28:12-17 describes one who was:
Full of wisdom
Perfect in beauty
Created by God
Blameless in his ways
Present in Eden
Many Christians understand this passage to refer beyond the earthly king of Tyre and point to Satan’s original condition before his rebellion.

“Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.”
God created Satan good, but Satan chose rebellion.
Pride and Rebellion
Isaiah 14:12-15 contains a description often associated with Satan’s fall.
Five statements reveal his pride:
“I will ascend to heaven.”
“I will raise my throne above the stars of God.”
“I will sit on the mount of assembly.”
“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds.”
“I will make myself like the Most High.”
Rather than worshiping God, Satan desired God’s position.
Isaiah 14:15
“Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit.”
Pride remains the root of all rebellion against God.
The Fall of Other Angels
Scripture indicates that Satan was not alone in his rebellion.
Revelation 12:9 says:
“And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan… and his angels were thrown down with him.”
These fallen angels are commonly called demons.
They continue to oppose God’s work, deceive people, and seek to hinder God’s purposes in the world.
Satan in the Garden of Eden
After his rebellion, Satan appears in Genesis as the serpent who tempted Eve.
Genesis 3 records how Satan questioned God’s Word and encouraged disobedience.
His methods included:
Creating doubt
Distorting truth
Appealing to pride
Promising false freedom
The result was humanity’s fall into sin and separation from God.
Satan’s Activity Today
The Bible teaches that Satan continues to work in the world.

1 Peter 5:8
“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

Jesus Defeated Satan
The good news of the gospel is that Satan’s defeat has already been secured through Jesus Christ.
Jesus resisted Satan’s temptations.
Jesus cast out demons.
Jesus conquered sin through His death.
Jesus defeated death through His resurrection.
Colossians 2:15
“When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.”
The cross and resurrection guarantee Satan’s final defeat.
Satan’s Future Judgment
Although Satan remains active today, his future is certain.
Revelation 20:10
“And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone.”
One day evil will be completely removed.
God’s kingdom will be fully established.
Christ’s victory will be seen by all creation.

Christians do not need to live in fear of Satan.
Scripture teaches:
God is sovereign.
Jesus has already won the victory.
The Holy Spirit empowers believers.
Truth overcomes deception.
Faith overcomes fear.
