One of the greatest blessings of the Christian life is the assurance of salvation.
Many believers wonder:
“Am I really saved?”
“Can I know that I belong to God?”
The Bible teaches that those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ can have confidence in God’s promises. Our assurance does not rest on our feelings, our performance, or our ability to be perfect. It rests on the faithfulness of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Our confidence rests not in our own strength, but in the faithfulness of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ.
What Is Assurance of Salvation?
Assurance of salvation is the confidence that we belong to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
It is the settled confidence that:
Our sins have been forgiven.
We have been reconciled to God.
We are His children.
We have eternal life.
God will remain faithful to His promises.
This assurance comes from God’s Word, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the saving work of Jesus Christ.
Can We Know We Are Saved?
Yes.
The Bible teaches that believers can know they have eternal life.
Our confidence is not based upon being good enough.
It is based upon God’s grace.
Jesus accomplished everything necessary for our salvation through His death and resurrection.
Those who trust Him can rest in His promises rather than living in constant fear or uncertainty.
What Gives Us Assurance?
God provides many reasons for confidence.
God’s Promises
God always keeps His promises.
Everything He has promised through Jesus Christ is trustworthy.
The Finished Work of Christ
Jesus completely accomplished our salvation.
Nothing needs to be added to His perfect sacrifice.
The Witness of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit confirms within believers that they belong to God.
He produces spiritual fruit and helps us grow in faith.
A Growing Life of Faith
Although Christians are not perfect, spiritual growth provides evidence that God is working within us.
A growing desire to love God, obey His Word, worship Him, and serve others reflects His transforming grace.
What About Doubt?
Many faithful Christians experience seasons of doubt.
Difficult circumstances, temptation, suffering, or spiritual struggles may cause us to question ourselves.
During those times, we are called to return to God’s promises rather than trusting our emotions.
God’s faithfulness does not change when our feelings change.
He remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Does Assurance Mean We Stop Growing?
No.
Assurance is not permission to ignore God’s will.
Instead, confidence in God’s grace encourages believers to pursue holiness, worship, obedience, and faithful service.
The more we understand God’s love, the more we desire to follow Him.
Living with Confidence
Assurance allows believers to live with joy instead of fear.
We can pray with confidence.
We can serve with confidence.
We can face suffering with confidence.
We can share our faith with confidence.
Because our hope rests in Jesus Christ, we look forward to eternal life with peace rather than uncertainty.
The Hope of Every Believer
God desires His children to know Him personally.
He invites us to trust His promises, rest in His grace, and live with joyful confidence.
Our assurance is grounded not in ourselves, but in the unchanging character of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Because He is faithful, we can have confidence in Him.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the assurance You give through Jesus Christ. Thank You that my salvation rests in Your grace and Your faithfulness rather than my own strength. Help me to trust Your promises when I struggle with doubt and to grow in confidence as I follow You. Strengthen my faith through Your Word and by the work of Your Holy Spirit. May my life reflect the joy and peace that come from knowing I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
