The Church as a Community

The Church as a Community: Growing Together in Christ
The Church is more than a place to attend—it is a family of faith where believers worship together, encourage one another, serve their neighbors, and grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Church is more than a place to attend. It is a community of believers united in Jesus Christ, growing together in faith, encouraging one another, and serving God’s purposes in the world.
From the beginning, God created people for relationship. Christians are called not only to follow Christ individually but also to live as part of God’s family. The Church provides a place where believers worship together, learn together, pray together, serve together, and support one another through every season of life.
Christian faith was never intended to be lived alone.

Created for Community
When God created humanity, He declared that it was not good for people to be alone. Throughout Scripture, God gathers people into families, communities, and ultimately His Church.
The Christian life is personal, but it is never private. Believers grow best when they worship, learn, pray, and serve alongside other followers of Christ.
God uses relationships within the Church to encourage faith, provide accountability, and help believers mature spiritually.
The Early Church as a Community
The first Christians devoted themselves to:
The apostles’ teaching
Fellowship
Prayer
Worship
Breaking bread together
Serving one another
Sharing resources
Encouraging one another
The early Church was known not only for what it believed but also for how believers loved and cared for one another.
Their community became a powerful witness to the world.
The Church as the Family of God
Scripture describes believers as members of God’s household.
Because of Jesus Christ, Christians become brothers and sisters in faith. The Church becomes a spiritual family where people support one another, celebrate together, grieve together, and grow together.
In a world often marked by loneliness and division, the Church offers belonging, encouragement, and hope.
The Church as the Body of Christ
The Bible also describes the Church as the Body of Christ.
Just as a body has many parts with different functions, believers have different gifts, abilities, and callings.
Every member matters.
Every gift is important.
Every believer has a role to play in the life and mission of the Church.
When believers work together, the Church becomes stronger and more effective in serving Christ.
Why Community Matters
Christian community provides:
Encouragement during difficult times
Friendships centered on faith
Opportunities to serve
Accountability and spiritual support
Prayer and care
Wisdom and guidance
Opportunities to learn and grow
A place to belong
God often works through other believers to strengthen, challenge, and encourage us.
Community and the Trinity
The Church reflects the nature of the Triune God.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit exist in perfect relationship and unity.
Because we are created in God’s image, we are designed for relationships as well.
Christian community reflects God’s love, unity, and care as believers live together in faith.
The United Methodist Understanding
John Wesley believed that Christians grow best in community.
Early Methodists gathered in classes, bands, and small groups for prayer, study, encouragement, accountability, and service.
Wesley taught that there is no holiness apart from social holiness. Christian faith grows stronger when believers encourage one another and walk together in discipleship.
