Even in seasons of grief, God walks beside us with comfort, strength, and hope.
Walking Through Grief With God
Finding Hope Through Loss and Change
By Susie Travis
Grief changes you.
It changes how you see life, how you remember moments, and sometimes even how you understand yourself.
Over the years, I have walked through different seasons of loss, including the deaths of both of my parents. My father passed away in 1992, and my mother passed away in 2022.
Even when faith is strong, grief is still real.
There is no simple way to prepare for losing people you love deeply. Certain memories stay with you forever. Holidays feel different. Family gatherings change. Sometimes the quiet moments are the hardest.
And yet, through every season of grief, I found that God never abandoned me.
Grief Does Not Follow a Schedule
One thing I learned is that grief does not move in a straight line.
Some days feel peaceful.
Other days bring unexpected sadness.
A song, a photograph, a familiar recipe, or even a simple conversation can suddenly bring back memories and emotions you thought had settled.
At times, grief feels heavy.
At other times, gratitude slowly begins to grow alongside the sorrow.
Both can exist together.
God’s Presence in Difficult Seasons
During seasons of loss, I learned to lean more deeply on:
- prayer
- Scripture
- church family
- quiet trust in God
Sometimes faith did not look strong or confident.
Sometimes faith simply meant continuing to pray when I had no words.
Sometimes it meant showing up to worship while carrying sadness.
Sometimes it meant trusting that God was still present even when life felt uncertain.
Over time, I realized something important:
God’s presence is often felt most deeply during the seasons when we need Him most.
The Gift of Christian Community
One of the greatest blessings during grief is the presence of faithful people who walk beside you.
Meals.
Cards.
Phone calls.
Prayers.
Quiet conversations.
These simple acts of kindness matter more than people realize.
The church became a reminder that no one is meant to carry sorrow alone.
God often comforts us through the love, prayers, and support of others.
What Grief Taught Me
Grief taught me:
- compassion
- deeper dependence on God
- gratitude for relationships and memories
- the importance of Christian community
- greater understanding of hope and eternal life
It also reminded me not to take ordinary moments for granted.
Healing does not mean forgetting.
Love continues through memory, faith, and the lasting impact people leave on our lives.
God Walks With Us Through Grief
Sometimes people feel pressure to move through grief quickly or hide their pain.
But grief is part of loving deeply.
God does not ask us to pretend sorrow is easy.
Instead, He walks beside us through it.
Even in grief, God continues bringing:
- comfort
- strength
- peace
- hope
- reminders that we are never alone
Over time, I learned that healing often happens slowly, one day at a time.
A Word for Others
If you are grieving today, I want you to know this:
You are not weak for mourning.
You are not alone in your sorrow.
And you do not have to pretend everything is fine.
God walks with us through grief gently, patiently, and faithfully.
Sometimes healing comes through tears.
Sometimes through prayer.
Sometimes through community.
Sometimes simply through taking one step forward at a time.
There is hope, even in grief.
Not because loss is easy, but because Christ remains near to the brokenhearted.
Grounded in Scripture (Truth)
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18 (NASB)
