Toyota Corolla
Susie Travis — Saved Beside the Truck
Scripture Reflection
“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1 (NASB)
My Story
About thirty years ago, I was driving home from school on the interstate in my little Toyota Corolla. I was in the right-hand lane, going uphill. Beside me in the left lane was a large 18-wheel log truck.
My car sat much lower than the grill of the truck. Without realizing I was there, the driver began moving into my lane.
Suddenly, the truck struck the back left corner of my car.
My car spun around until my windshield and front grill were facing the front of the truck. I was sliding sideways down the interstate directly in front of the truck’s grill. The truck driver could not even see my car.
He kept pushing my car sideways down the road.
Later, the driver said he thought he had a flat tire. He had no idea he had hit another vehicle.
The moment I realized what was happening, I cried out to God:
“Help me!”
I remember gripping the steering wheel tightly. I also remember pressing my left arm and elbow hard against the door armrest. I know it happened because afterward there was a dent and impression left in the hard plastic armrest from the pressure.
Eventually, the truck driver slowed down to pull off the interstate.
When the truck finally stopped, the driver climbed out and was shocked to discover my little car directly in front of his truck. He truly had not known I was there.
Even more surprising was the damage.
My side mirror was broken. There was a small damaged area on the door and a flat tire. That was all.
Looking back, I truly believe God protected and saved my life that day.
Oddly enough, I do not remember feeling overwhelming fear during the accident. What I remember most is calling out to God for help.
And He answered.
Even today, I am very cautious when driving beside 18-wheel trucks, especially near their blind spots. But every time I think about that day, I am reminded that God was with me on that interstate.
He saw me even when the truck driver could not.
Faith Through Difficult Moments
Sometimes God’s protection comes in dramatic ways we never forget. In moments where life feels completely out of control, God remains present, faithful, and near.
This experience reminded me that prayer does not always have to be long or complicated. Sometimes faith is simply crying out:
“Lord, help me.”
And trusting that He hears.
