Faith in the Waiting — trusting God through grief, unanswered prayers, hope, and the quiet strength of His faithful presence.
Susie Travis — Faith in the Waiting
Trusting God Through Unanswered Prayers
Opening Reflection
There are seasons in life when prayers are answered in beautiful and obvious ways. But there are also seasons when the answers are different than we hoped, the waiting continues, and the pain remains part of the journey.
This testimony is about trusting God through unanswered prayers, ongoing hope, grief, loss, and learning that God’s presence remains faithful even in difficult seasons.
My Story
There are some prayers I prayed with all my heart that were not answered the way I hoped.
I wanted Daddy healed.
I prayed for more time, more memories, more years together. But Daddy still died, and the grief that followed was deep and painful. Losing someone you love changes you forever. Even now, there are moments when I still miss him terribly.
I wanted Sean to stay close to home.
When Sean moved away, part of my heart went with him. Like many mothers, I wanted my family nearby. I wanted holidays, birthdays, ordinary moments together, and the comfort of knowing they were just down the road. Even now, I still pray that Sean and his family might someday move back closer to home.
I wanted my voice restored.
After thyroid surgery damaged the nerves in my throat, I lost the ability to sing the way I once could. Music had always been part of my worship, part of my joy, and part of how I expressed my faith. Losing my singing voice felt like losing part of myself.
And yet, even through all of this, I never stopped believing God could heal.
I still pray for healing.
I still pray for restoration.
I still believe God is able.
But over the years, I have also learned something important:
God’s faithfulness is not measured only by whether He changes our circumstances. Sometimes His faithfulness is seen in how He carries us through them.
God did not abandon me in grief.
He did not leave me in disappointment.
He did not walk away in the middle of unanswered prayers.
Instead, He stayed with me.
Through seasons of sorrow, God strengthened my faith.
Through loss, He taught me compassion for others who hurt.
Through disappointment, He taught me to trust Him one day at a time.
Through weakness, He opened new ways for me to serve.
I may have lost my singing voice, but God still gave me a voice.
Today, I use that voice differently:
through teaching,
encouraging,
writing,
sharing my testimony,
and helping others grow in faith.
My story is not a testimony that every prayer was answered the way I wanted.
My testimony is this:
God has remained faithful through every season.
I still pray.
I still hope.
I still believe in miracles.
But even in the waiting, I have learned that God walks beside us with grace, strength, and love.
Some prayers may still be unfinished chapters in my life, but I know this with confidence:
God is still writing the story.
Scripture Reflections
“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”
— Bible 2 Corinthians 12:9
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18
“Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”

What I Learned
- Faith does not mean life is always easy.
- Some prayers are answered differently than we hoped.
- Grief and faith can exist together.
- Waiting does not mean God has forgotten us.
- God still works through wounded people.
- Hope can continue even in hard seasons.
- God’s presence is often the greatest gift of all.
Living the Message
If you are walking through grief, disappointment, unanswered prayer, illness, distance from family, or a season of waiting, you are not alone.
God sees your tears.
God hears your prayers.
God understands your sorrow.
Sometimes miracles happen suddenly.
Sometimes healing comes slowly.
Sometimes the answer is still unfolding.
But through every season, God remains faithful.
Keep praying.
Keep trusting.
Keep bringing your heart honestly before God.
